Personal:

I was married in 1997 to my beautiful wife Lybi (confessions of a piano teacher on the blog), and we have 3 wonderful boys who are just as active as I was when I was little (he he). I grew up in southeastern Michigan, and my family became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when I was 6. I attended BYU, and served a mission in Berlin, Germany. After graduating from BYU with a degree in Health and Human Performance (pre-physical therapy), I promptly changed careers and started working with computers (although no programming for me). We have moved across the country several times, and currently live in Mesa, AZ.  I work in computer security for a major nationwide homebuilder.

AM - ran 12 easy miles.  Did 8 miles, then took a break for a drink, then ran another 4 miles.  The first 8 miles were nice and easy, average pace somewhere around 8:45/mile.  The last 4 miles were a bit faster, I was working on hitting my stride, and had some miles closer to 8:00.  Average pace for the entire run was 8:35/mile.  I am waiting with bated breath to see how Sasha and the others do at TOU.  Additional info:  does anyone else have issues with being lightheaded, especially after a run?  This seems to happen most offen if I am crouching or kneeling down, and then stand up, but sometimes it really bothers me.  I don't think I am dehydrated - I have drunk 64 oz of Gatorade today already, plus several large cups of water.  I have also had enough to eat, and I have been taking my vitamins.  Maybe just low blood pressure after a long run?  Any ideas would be helpful.

What was your average heart rate during the run? Do you have a Heart rate monitor? Sometimes if I don't hydrate good the day before it is like a domino affect, then I am dehydrated for the next days run and so on.... I will then get alittle lightheaded, and dizy.

James, I have had the lightheadness on a few occassions. It is usually when Syliva has been bopping me in the head for something I did or didn't do.

Hey, the pacing at St. George? Who knows? My goals are sometimes beyond my capabile effort. Ususally, you know the first few miles how the day might go. My only thought, it is difficult to run more than a 1 or 2 minute negative split. If the goal is 3:15, likley need to at half way somewhere around 1:38. We have 3 weeks to assess what makes sense, how I recover from TOU and how you rebound from not feeling well.

James, when has been your last hard race where you have averaged under 7:30 for 10 to 13.1 miles? I remember you ran a very good 10 miles at Provo.

That was my last hard race averaging under 7:30/mile. In fact, at the prover river 10-miler, my average pace was 6:51/mile. I should be able to do 30-40 seconds slower for the entire marathon easily. My fitness is better than it was then, my weight is down even more (in fact, I will be at least 10 pounds lighter than last time I ran St. George - looking at between 155 and 160 lbs). Clay, I do have a HRM, but I usually do not wear it, as I prefer to know what my pace is based on what the effort feels like. My HR is also a bit higher than the average person's, so it throws the whole run off because I am worrying about my HR - I average about 165 or so for an easy run. My exercise HR has always been high, even when I was in exceptional shape in high school. My resting HR is still in the 50's.

James I've also had the lightheadedness usually after long Saturday runs. Like you said it's when I'm crouching or get up too quick from laying down or sitting and momentarily feel like I might pass out and then it goes away. I'm not sure about why this happens but it does seem to me that since I've upped my mileage this year to 50-65 miles a week I don't experience this much anymore. Prior to this year I mostly have done 30-40 miles a week during summer/fall marathon prep.
