Personal:

I was married in 1997 to my beautiful wife Lybi (confessions of a piano teacher on the blog), and we have 3 wonderful boys who are just as active as I was when I was little (he he). I grew up in southeastern Michigan, and my family became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when I was 6. I attended BYU, and served a mission in Berlin, Germany. After graduating from BYU with a degree in Health and Human Performance (pre-physical therapy), I promptly changed careers and started working with computers (although no programming for me). We have moved across the country several times, and currently live in Mesa, AZ.  I work in computer security for a major nationwide homebuilder.

AM - 5.0 easy miles with the Garmin.  Achilles felt good when I woke up, but was fairly stiff when I started running.  If anyone has any suggestions or experience with a stiff or sore achilles tendon, please feel free to post.  Total time for topday's run was 40:27, average pace of 8:05/mile.

I bet that if your achilles is "stiff", it is actually your calf muscles that are tight. I bet warmth and massage with "the stick" or a rolling pin would help. I see a lot of people complain of this issue now that it is getting colder. I wonder if the cold makes your muscles tighten up a little bit?

I would agree with Lybi, IBProphin with warmth and massage should do the trick, also don't forget to stretch!!

I've had problems with my right achilles since I first started running.

What helps me: everyday on some small stepladders I do 6 x 15 reps of toe raises and heel lowers. This can be painful at first but after 6 weeks you can feel results. Also calf stretching & massage helps and I walk before I start running slowly, then gradully faster. I also sometimes run uphill sections up on my toes and in summer small doses of barefoot running to strengthen. I still have some achilles problems, especially post-race but its under control. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. Lybi helped me massage my calves last night with a rolling pin (need to get a "stick"), and I had a heating pad on it for quite a while last night. It was still stiff first thing this morning, but after watching the trials, it had loosened up, and gave me no troubles during my workout in the morning. I will try your suggestion of the calf raises on a small stepladder. Am also going to continue wearing the strassburg sock, as I know that a tight PF can contribute to tightness in the achilles.
