Personal:

I was married in 1997 to my beautiful wife Lybi (confessions of a piano teacher on the blog), and we have 3 wonderful boys who are just as active as I was when I was little (he he). I grew up in southeastern Michigan, and my family became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when I was 6. I attended BYU, and served a mission in Berlin, Germany. After graduating from BYU with a degree in Health and Human Performance (pre-physical therapy), I promptly changed careers and started working with computers (although no programming for me). We have moved across the country several times, and currently live in Mesa, AZ.  I work in computer security for a major nationwide homebuilder.

Yay!  My back is finally feeling good enough to run again!  I was thinking about this as I ran today, and I have the feeling that running helped me in two ways:

1) The increase in my health and fitness may have lessened the extent of the injury

2) It may have also hastened the healing process (although I am positive that the chiropractic visits didn't hurt either - just no cracks about my head not being on right . . .)

Just did 3 miles this evening to loosen things up again and get into the flow.  Worked on making them easy miles.  I also ran in new socks today - they are very comfy!  Total time for my run today was 24:44, average pace of 8:15/mile, and that was with the last 1/4 mile at about MP.  I feel good (dah dah dah dah dah dah dah), I knew that  I would . . . so nice (dah dah), so nice (dah dah), (dah dah dah dah dah dah, <primal scream>)!  Boy, this is scary, I'm just giddy to be running again, and after only 3 days enforced inactivity!

James,

Your blog stood out to me because I'm a fellow Valley of the Sun runner. Glad your back is feeling better.

I've noticed you run on Fridays, the day before your long run. I've tried that a few times, but my legs feel like jello for the Saturday long runs. How do your legs hold up for your long runs? Was there an "adjustment period" when you started doing this? I need to kick up my mileage, and an extra day would help.

After my last injury, I started subscribing to Sasha's theory of running 6 days a week - liken it to a table - is a table sturdier on 3 legs or 6. I may have been able to adjust to it easier because when I first started running again, I didn't have long runs, per se, I just ran every day but Sunday. As my mileage has gone up, I have been able to increase my long run on Saturday without seeing any ill effects. However, I didn't really start doing that until I got up around 40 miles/week. How many days per week do you currently run?
