Headed up to Steiner this morning for a little swim. After fiddling with my goggles and swim cap for the first few laps it was basically uneventful until I smacked my head into the head of another swimmer who was heading in the opposite direction in my lane.  She had started swimming with the assumption that we were splitting the lane. I had been the only one in the lane before she got in and was circling but she didn't wait to jump in before figuring out what I was doing.   It was a direct collision and it kind of hurt, but was more of a surprise. I thought I might have hit the wall at the end of the pool! She was ok as well but she terminated her swim at that point--I don't know why, I don't think it was because she was hurt.  Probably just because it was startling.

Anyway, I ended up swimming about 1700m, and included some fast laps that felt pretty good.

You might want to consider wearing a neoprene helmet on future swims. Besides offering protection from unseen perils, they are quite stylish. My bet is that your lane buddy was too embarrassed to keep sharing the pool with you. It reminds me of a story my HS English teacher told me about a vacation he took in Scotland. As he was enjoying a moment of quiet reverie while running along a quiet country road, he broadsided a cow and fell on his backside. The cow seemed mildly annoyed. I'm not suggesting, however, that your lane buddy bore any resemblance to a Scottish bovine.

Thanks for the laugh, Jed. You may be right on the reason for the hasty pool exit. I have been searching the web all day for a neoprene swimming helmet, but haven't found the right thing yet. Perhaps there is a market niche just waiting to be filled.

It took some searching, but I think I've found the perfect product: http://www.mansionathletics.com/ride-ons-helmets-full-soft-shell-helmet-w8058blulg.html

Jed--you've clearly hit the jackpot.
