Short-Term Running Goals:

Now that I'm (almost for sure) done having all the babies, I'm working on building consistency and seeing how fast I can get in my old age. ;)

Long-Term Running Goals:

I'd like to be a healthy and relatively injury-free runner for the rest of my life.

Personal:

I'm married to Eric (Faceless Ghost on the blog) and we have very active daughters and one dog. I have a PhD in sociology and demography, and I'm incredibly grateful to have work that is meaningful and that builds on my academic experience. I run because it makes me feel strong and it helps to keep the crazy away (there is a long history of abuse and mental illness in my extended family).

I was looking forward to this race because I feel like I've been getting a little bit faster and I wanted to have a better half-marathon PR. I also thought I had gotten over the whole needing-to-go-to-the-bathroom-during-a-race thing, and yesterday or today Eric said, "This'll probably be your first half where you don't have to stop to go to the bathroom." It wasn't.

It wasn't as bad as my first half marathon (when I went to the hospital after) or my second (when I spent about 20 minutes in a port-a-potty), but it wasn't as good as my third (when I just ducked behind a bush (on Antelope Island) to pee). I still met my goal of finishing in under 2 hours, and up until about mile 10 I was still below my target marathon pace, but it's disappointing that I might have made my *dream* goal of finishing in 1:45 if I had been feeling better. Stupid trots...but I guess that figuring that out is part of the training game as much as anything else.

Overall it was a good experience (even with the rain and cold). I like road races, and at least there were port-a-potties to use. Like always, my favorite part was seeing Eric at the finish line.

Great job! You would have hit your dream goal if it weren't for . . . well, you know :)

Sorry about the potty issues, I FEEL your pain!!! But you did great and if that had not been an issue you would have hit that dream goal! It will happen!!

Have you ever tried taking Immodium the night before and the morning of? It works for me most of the time. I also had someone tell me that it often times means you cam into the race dehydrated so maybe try drinking a TON the week of a race. That has seemed to help a little.

GOOD LUCK figuring it all out! Glad you had a fun race despite the issues.

Way to go. It was great fun out there today. My secret is using fiber supliments the day before, to clean out the pipes. Careful with immodium, that can do weird things to you during a race.

What weird things can it do??? I know we have talked about this before, but refresh my memory!! I take it before every marathon and it has done wonders for me.

Can give you stomach issues, just messes with digestive system too much while you body is under stress already. I took one during my first Wasatch 100 and felt terrible for quite awhile. I've avoided it since.

Interesting. Maybe it is something to experiment with on a long run. It works well for me and I know it works well for many others. Maybe it was the 100 miler????

Whatever, we ALL KNOW you are way wiser than I am in the running arena!

Kelli - I had a bunch of Pepto 1-2 hours before, but it seems like that didn't go into effect until awhile after the race. I'd like to get to the point where I don't need anything (Pepto, Imodium, etc). I probably should have been better hydrated, though.

Crockett - I've been laying off fiber the day before races, so maybe that's part of my problem. Oh - Eric says he thinks he saw you come through the finish line. Sorry we didn't get a chance to say hi in person.

I have never tried Pepto, but if you are willing to try that maybe you should give Immodium a try. I no longer take it unless I am feeling especially ill. I think I have finally gotten used to racing! But it was a lifesaver at the beginning.
