This was my fourth attempt to run all the way home from work.  FAIL!  I think it's about 15.5 miles home, so I should be able to do it.  The problem was I left at 6:30pm and it was already getting dark after a half hour. 

I had a friend/coworker pick me up and take me to work this morning.  I packed all my gear except my headlamp.  That would have been useful because at mile 6.5 I fell in a hole.  I saw it coming, but didn't think it would be as deep as it was.  So the fall didn't hurt, but my glasses fell off, and it was difficult to locate them in the dark with blurred vision and in a state of daze and confusement. 

The temperature when I left was 101 and 97 when I finished.  The Gatorade that I put in the freezer all day completely melted after an hour.  I took a GU at mile 9.  Some people tell me that they can feel the surge of energy after popping them.  They do nothing for me.  Am I too fat?  At mile 10 I called my wife.  The darkness was ridiculous and not making the run fun.  I finished off my Gatorade knowing she was bringing me ice cold water.  A couple of blog entries ago I mentioned that blueberry pomegranate Gatorade is the best.  It's so good I think I picked it off the shelf of AJ's Fine Foods.  Well after holding it in my hand for an hour and a half it tends to get foamy.  Then it's not quite as tasty.

My average pace was around 9:20.  My leg doesn't feel too bad, but I should go stretch it now.

Yep you should definitely take the headlamp next time! At least you didn't get hurt / stand on your glasses whilst in the hole.

I use go gel, ya might get a booost off one of those... maybe you havent quite got to the point your out of energy and your taking the gu in time.... I dont always get a boost. if I time it well I dont get the boost but if I leave it tooo late and im slowing and feeling knackered (ha ha had to put that in) then I get the boooost :)

Actually what's funny, as I've spent some time in Spain, is that Spaniards don't like Root Beer. They say it tastes like medicine. Yet their hard candy tastes like cough drops!

Thanks Steve. I just need to start earlier so it's not dark and maybe wait until it's cooler. Of coures the days will be getting shorter as it starts to cool down.

Burt - 500 commando points for the effort, brutal heat, darkness - Hey, be careful out there. I ran to work once, 15 miles, never again, too much traffic. It does make sense, get your workout in, not worth the risk.

If you are going to try it again: things needed: crossing gaurd vest, camel back loaded with your favorite gatorade, flashing red bike lights hooked to your shorts, hockey knee pads to protect against potential mishaps, bike helmet and a a hockey stick to clear the road as you run. And, lastly, a motorcycle police escort with sirens. Oh, also, a TV crew to document the trip for us bloggers.

I drove by the hole the next day. It was about a four feet wide and two feet deep. The fall was gentle enough that I didn't get a scratch, just a little dirty. My glasses got scratched though.

Oh Burt, what a bummer! Whenever I run in the dark I get a little disoriented, I 'see' holes everywhere, I feel very lucky mine are all imaginary.

Regarding gu ... I actually don't feel it, but I do find I can keep on pace easier than when I don't take it. Knowing you, I bet you will do the 15.5 miles soon, but it would help if you started off a bit slower ;-).

Holy crow - that's a brutal temperature to do a long run in. I would recommend more trying to run to work than from, although that could be a major issue if you don't have showers there :) BTW, your FAIL reminded me of a website my brother-in-law told me about - http://failblog.org (they have a G-rated section only, which is all I have ever seen).

Jeez, what a brutal adventure! The heat is bad, darkness is not so good, holes are completely unacceptable. And then foaming gatorade to boot; I would have fallen to the pavement at that point.

Bonnie - how did you know I started out fast? I didn't give my splits. Were you watching me? Actually the first couple of miles were in the low low 8's, but it's hard to go slower just because there's some gradual downhill.

James - I could find myself wasting a lot of time on that website.

Auntie Em - It didn't hurt at all, but my left calf has been bugging for about a week and a half now. I'm going to take some rest and hope it gets better.

Burt -- you *always* start off (too) fast. I don't need to actually see you to know ;-). That is why I am not sure I can run with you, I will sometimes start off my runs about 9-10 min pace, I don't warm up for about 20 mins -- I would drive you crazy!!!
