So much to say today.  Where to start?  Well, I wasn't feeling great last week, but I should've run Saturday.  I used the excuse that my wife was in Mexico with my sister.  I wanted to do either a fast 3.1 miles or a trial run of 6.2 miles for this Saturday's 10k.  So I decided to do the trial run today.  I want to run a sub 50 Saturday.  I set my Garmin to alert me at each kilometer and at 5 minute intervals.  For the first three or four kilometers I was under the pace I needed to be at.  Then it started to creep a little over.  I could feel that I had slowed down a little, but not too bad.  Over all I felt pretty steady.  I finished in 50:22.  Am I confident that I will be able to break 50 Saturday?  One thing worries me.  Today's run was mostly on sidewalk.  I run a lot faster on sidewalk than anything else.  London's Run will be mostly on dirt farm roads.  I'll just have to push myslef a little harder.  I need to go about 4 seconds faster per mile to break the 50 barrier.

Side note:  Have you ever watched the hit situational comedy The Office?  There was one episode where they had an office 5k.  Andrew Bernard had problems with nipple bleeding.  That is totally me.  Now what is the measure of a true friend?  Someone who is not a true friend would just say, "that's gross, dude.  I'm glad that doesn't happen to me."  A true friend will tell you, "Hey, you know what?  If you wear Body Armor, that won't happen."  Luckily I have a true friend that turned me on to Body Armor.  I bear my testimony that it works.  But today I had a bit of a problem with it.  I guess I didn't tuck it into my shorts good enough this morning.  For the first bit, it kept riding up on me.  I also think it has to do with my shrinking gut.  It used to just grab on to my underbelly and stay.  Now (look at the weight loss since Jan. 1st) there's less to grab on to.  I finally got it tucked in good enough to stay.

Time: 50:22 (avg. pace - 8:07 min./mi.)

Splits: 7:49, 7:59, 8:03, 8:18, 8:27, 8:04 1:41 (8:25)

Finish time: 7:30 am

Temp: 50

Weight: 201.00

AWESOME trial run and great splits. A friend ran London's Run last year. It sounds like a run with great cause. I'm so excited for you.

Here's a little pep talk for race day. Stay focus, run the tangents, I heard there's a few turns in them cow pastures. Don't go out too fast, save that adrenaline for the second 5K. Pick out road kills to pass and keep reeling them in. You can go sub-50!!!

Have you tried Body Glide for chaffing? It works. GOOD LUCK! Here's to a sub-50 London's Run!!!

From Marion on Mon, Jan 26, 2009 at 15:51:29

That is the FUNNIEST episode EVER!!! THe St George running store had nipple cover sticky things. My husband picked them up and said they would be great for the guy in that episode of the Office ;) I use the body glide for chafing on my arm. It works great!

HI Smooth!!!

From Burt on Mon, Jan 26, 2009 at 16:01:04

Smooth - it's a great race, you're right. I ran the half marathon last year. The problem is, right before the race, London's mother gets on the microphone and tells the sad story of her daughter. I'm like, "Don't get me emotional before the race." I do use Body Glide, also. Mostly I put it under my arms where my Body Armor shirt rubs. But if I know I'm going on a real long run, I put it everywhere.

Marion - confession: Don't tell anyone! On my night leg of my very first Ragnar, I wore a pair of my wife's breast pads. One fell out on the way, and the other was somewhere near my navel. But no bleeding...

From Marion on Mon, Jan 26, 2009 at 16:03:08

that is AWESOME Burt!!! :D

From Smooth on Mon, Jan 26, 2009 at 16:05:40

LOL!!! BURT, thanks for the visual. May be you should patent that breast pads idea and get SG Running store to sell it. :)

From RivertonPaul on Mon, Jan 26, 2009 at 17:04:34

Regular band-aids also work fine.

From Marion on Mon, Jan 26, 2009 at 17:06:18

Paul- the band aides are functional but they aren't nearly as creative ;) Burt- you gotta stick with the nursing pads ;)

From Burt on Mon, Jan 26, 2009 at 18:57:23

Oh man! I got a star runner like Riverton Paul coming to my blog and the topic is bloody nipples. Dang it!

I did use the big band-aids on the first leg of the race. But I didn't have enough for all three. They do tend to pull hairs out with them when you take them off.

From Eric Day on Mon, Jan 26, 2009 at 19:41:14

Burt, awesome time. You are ready for a sub-50, the people in the race will pull your pace !. Hey, I will not accept anything less from you this next weekend.

Use the band aids, worry about hairs after the race, with the proud sub-50.

=)

Burt, that could have been the best episode ever, next to two weeks ago when Andy and Dwight decided to fight for Angelas love and honor. Holy crap I love that show, I like to tevo it and watch it while I ride my bike (on a trainer its cold here). However Michaels carb loading was classic! P.S. the little round bandaids are fantastic little nipple covers and they dont pull your hair out, take it from me, I'm furry like a spider moonkey!!!!!!

From Burt on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 13:53:12

Thanks, Michelle's brother. Can I call you that? LOL! I love that they show the full episodes on-line. That show's too funny.

From Kelli on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 15:01:19

Great work, BURT!!

I have seen that episode of The Office, funny!!! I was going to suggest Body Armor, but I see you already know that!! Now, you need to go get some smaller shirts!!! Shrinking is good, but then you have to spend $$$!!!

From rinny on Wed, Jan 28, 2009 at 10:15:44

just laughing about the whole office episode comment...sorry not laughing at you though, that doesn't sound fun at all.

great run though. and congrats on the weight loss however being n ew at this not sure where you started..

From Burt on Wed, Jan 28, 2009 at 11:32:34

You know, Corrine, it hurts my wife more than it hurts me. I don't even notice it. One time I came home and it had soaked through my white tank top, and my wife just cried out in pain. LOL.

As for the weight loss, two years ago I was at 254. I went on a crash diet for two months and lost 42 lbs. I managed to stay right around that for a couple of years from just running. But after this Christmas I gained about 10 lbs. Now I'm going on another diet, and I hope to get down to at least 190. Thanks!
