I would defintely like to run at Boston. Ideally, my goal is to run the marathon in under 3 hours. Here is what I would like to break in each distance this year...

Marathon: 3:00

1/2: 1:20

10K: 38:00 34:00

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be in the 20 year club at the St George marathon. If I could win a few shorter races in between, that would be great.

Started out this morning at marathon pace for the first 2.5, for me that is 7:30/mile I think... Hope to get that to about 7:00 to qualify for Boston. I ran St. George this year at 7:15 for the first 13, then calves cramped up due to lack of taining and finished with an overall pace of 8:15!

The next 3.1 on this morning's run was at 6:15/mile, which is actually faster than any 5K I've ran this year. Currently, fastest this year was about 20:00. But then again that was back in June and only a few months after starting to run again after about 6 years off!

So my question is, what is my real marathon pace? Should it be 7:00 now, or should I work down to that?

Also, what should I be running threshold at? VO2 max?

Easy miles are just what ever feels comfortable right?

Thanks for any help, my high school distance coach didn't teach me all this!

You should see that guy now; apparently he is like a distance coaching master!

Nate, once you get in shape, sub 7:00 will easily be your marathon pace. For now and up until the summer (and maybe even all through summer for this year and then step it up more next year) just worry about mileage. The reason you bonked is the reason most of us have bonked - especially in a first marathon - lack of mileage. Try to get to the point that you are doing 60-70 miles a week CONSISTENTLY! That is the key more than anything else in marathon training... consistent running - 6 days/week, now until SGM - it has to become a part of your lifestyle. Then you will EASILY be able to qualify for Boston.

My bro - James, that was there at club the other day - had a PR of 3:30'ish coming into SGM this past year he ran very consistently (barely missing) and he ran a 2:55 in those crap conditions (he probably would have been pushing for 2:45). So go run, run, run - and every once-in-awhile throw in some marathon pace training at 3-10 miles at sub 7:00. It will be cake for you before you know it!
