Running Accomplishments:

Stay in the game, keep in the moment - have conquered a few of the holy grails of running - sub 3hr marathon, ran Boston and qualified for Boston at Boston, 10K PR under 6 min miles, won a couple of 5Ks in my early days of running, running for 30 years and ran 39 marathons.  The transistion to the back of the pack has not been easy, but, acceptance, stay in the game, root for others, enjoy the rest of the journey.  Another off the bucket list second =  Provo Half IM -  have done 6 open water Tris and 6 pool Tris.  Gave the STG IM a good Tri, hope to take another shot at the IM.

Short-Term Running Goals:

2013 Race Plan - STG Half IronMan, Lake Mead Rage Olympic distance, STG spring relay tri, STG half marathon, STG marathon, Cozumel IM, Utah Summer Games Triathlon at Gunlock, Murray 5k with family and Utah Half Distance Triathlon, 187 mile red rock relay,  STG marathon,

*note of clarification - cross training miles from biking and swimming calculated as follows: (as someone may wonder) 20 mile an hour bike = 5 cross training miles (those not familar with a 20 mph pace, good bike effort for long distance,  swimming, convert 1 hour swimming to 5 cross training miles.  For those that do not swim much, great cardio workout.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Enjoy the Swim, Bike Run thru Life - Hope to Run a Few Races Support Sylvie - Be a good coach   - Support Jenna, Jeremy, Taylor and Bonnie - my kids are now into running, who would of thunk it.  long term goals, recover from the ankle sprain, accept was it, have fun racing, mountain biking, faster swimming.

Personal:

BSRools, the B stands for Brent and the S for Sylvie.  The Rools come from my personal running rools over the years: Never complain once the run starts, allways pick up the pace into the wind and always pick up the pace on a hill. If someone whines, pick up the pace.  Once a goal is set, no whining, regardless of setbacks.  We were running when running was not Kool.   Kool comes from a race story, ran my first race, 5K wearing a "beanie that had "Kool Aid Kid"

Disclaimer: I would not call this a race today, but, since I did do my best under the circumstances, a positive attitude prevails and I will give it race report status.

Pre-Race Stuff:  Me and Sylvie hooked up with Tom, Kim, Mik'L and Clyde last night for a survey of the course and a so so meal at local Eats place.    It was very interesting to meet Clyde, no doubt with Gwen, he has great enthusiam for running, goals and his energy is contagious.   It was also nice to meet his lovely spouse Mik'L, sweet heart of a person.   I think she has a real talent for running if she chooses to chase it.   Kim made several joking comments about why is she running the race, it will be tough, etc.  Tom seemed rather calm, considering his agressive race plan.

Race Night :  Woke up several times during the night with the fridge making a noise, also some loud noises coming from one of the rooms?  I will not guess what they were.

Race Morning:  Surprisingly, the temps were about 40 degrees with the wind blowing.  Hopped on the bus with Tom and Kim, Air Darkhorse also got on the same bus, he had his game face on.   Colleen, Trudy and I will be darned if I can remember the others names also got on the same bus.  (Disappointing, never talked to Colleen after the race).  Normally, I am in race mode like Air Darkhorse, today, the most ever chatter from me while on the looming bus ride to the start.

PreRace: Warmed up with some light jogging with Sylvie, looking for the right tree.  Right tree found.   The light jogging, could tell that it would be trouble with the knee.

Start: Several of the bloggers were together chatting, streching and looking in race mode.  It would be a very good race day again for bloggers.  The start was smoother than most, little shoving, jossling, etc.  Role reversal today, normally, I am trying to weave in and out to get around other runners, today, I was the the road block.  ( It felt good to get in everyone way, ha ha, scared of getting ran over).

First Few Miles - 7:54, knew this was not a good sign, should have been under 7s, next 3 miles were about the same.  Sylvie passed me at about 5.5 and I passed her back at the water stop just before 6 miles.  By the way, seen Josse, about 1/2  into the race going flying past runners on the left side of the road.

Wheels coming off - The wheels starting coming off just before the right hand turn.  The knee was giving me fits.  Stopped and walk from about mile 7 to mile 8, Kim passed me with a big smile, good to see her running well, she was off to the races.  I wondered at that point if she would catch Sylvie.

Runners a Passing - May have been the biggest negative road kill ever, every runner from old, young, short, tall, waddling, wogging, etc. went by.  Funny thing, they seemed fast compared to my turtle pace.  I seen more behinds today than anyone should see in one day.

Any Port in a Storm - After walking a mile, decided to try anything to shuffle along, ran in the dirt off the road, ran stiff legged, tried not landing on the right foot with any downforce/pushoff.  This goofing around took my mind off the slow pace, just keep moving faster than walking.  I had several women runners ask me if I was alright?  What do you say to a question like that, short or long answer, well I am not ok will you carry me, or just say I am enjoying the view.  Anyway, I just said I'm just catching my breath, when the truth was that my heart rate likely never got over 130 for the race.

Last Mile -Now don't tell me bloggers are not motivating.  When I hit mile 12, I said, I cannot have bloggers see me shuffling at the end.  So, grit and beared the knew pain and ran an 8 minute mile for the last mile.

Awards - Stayed for the awards, several bloggers got awards, Tom, Sylvie, Cody, Chad, Josse and several others.  Bloggers rool again.

Chicked Report - Chicked by Sylvie, Kim, Josse and Lybi today from the blog and maybe others.   If they were not all good runners and earned it, I may be upset.

Brent it was great hanging out with you guys last night and today. Man I'm bummed the injury bug has been in your face so much lately. Man let's get those problems taken care of.

Still a gutsy performance, worth some serious commando points in my book. More commando points when you can kick those injuries to Mars.

From Kim on Sat, Apr 05, 2008 at 18:31:01

Man Brent, you are a trooper! You may need to do a bit more water jogging and bag the races for a bit to get back to 100%! It was hard to pass you as you were limping along there. I'm sure you and Sylvie are loving your massage! It was so fun to hang out with you guys last night! Thanks for being the blog's number one encourager!

From Sylvie on Sat, Apr 05, 2008 at 18:56:58

Your really brave to run with your knee problems. You had a great race considering.

Bye :)

From Superfly on Sat, Apr 05, 2008 at 19:53:42

Good job Brent. Your a hero for handling an injury soo good. Thanks for hangin last night.

I can't believe I turned around either. I knew better but for some reason I got worried that maybe they changed the course or something when I say Steve going down that road.

BTW you've got the best truck on the Blog by far!

From MichelleL on Sat, Apr 05, 2008 at 20:03:07

So sorry your knee prevented you from meeting your potential. You are always so positive, though. Thanks for your influence on the blog. Do you think in retrospect you should have bagged the race with your pain and all? I wonder under what circumstances bagging a race is a good idea, it is a hard thing for any of us to do, yet in some cases it's probably the right call.

From Lybi on Sat, Apr 05, 2008 at 20:06:45

What a great race report, you are so funny! I really think I may have beat you in the negative roadkill department. I got passed by so many people today, some of which did not even look like runners AT ALL. Your run today was a work of HEART and I am just proud of you for sticking it out with that knee. Please be careful, and recover thoroughly. The Roolsmaster is the king of the road, and you need to recover all the way, so you can get back to ruling your dominion. See you tomorrow at the Pachevs tomorrow. You coming?

From Jody on Sat, Apr 05, 2008 at 20:17:35

Way to hang in there!! You are one tough cookie!! You have so much heart! Hope that you are okay tomorrow!

From laura on Sat, Apr 05, 2008 at 20:35:30

Oh, Brent, I'm so sorry about the knee - but if we're looking for silver lining ... that's the best race report yet!! You've got such a great attitude and you've made your commando points legendary in the FRB community!! Hope you recover fully and quickly. Would hate to hear of more painful runs, even if they are triumphant.

From Benn on Sat, Apr 05, 2008 at 21:00:12

I hope the knee heals up soon, Brent, which I'm positive it will. If there's anything I've learned though, better to err on the side of caution. I know it stinks the big one right now, but just think about how awesome this summer and fall are going to be. Stay true to yourself and you're in my prayers. You'll be slicin' and dicing in no time!

From Christi on Sat, Apr 05, 2008 at 21:19:33

You & Lybi need to start a column. You both are such entertaining writers! Sounds like a fun day with the bloggies- so sorry the knee is still bumming. Glad you took it fairly easy, don't need you aggrivating that injury- just need it to go away ASAP!

From Cody on Sat, Apr 05, 2008 at 21:30:42

Brent- 200 commando points for gutting out a tough race. Negative 1000 points for running with an injury. Get well, THEN race. You will be much happier with the results. Seriously, nice chatting briefly with you and Sylvie. Get well soon.

From Chad on Sat, Apr 05, 2008 at 22:27:08

Brent, when I saw you on the course while we were cooling down, I knew there was something pretty serious going on, but you didn't let it show. You've got guts, man. That counts for a lot. Great effort. I hope you recover quickly.

From Jon on Sun, Apr 06, 2008 at 09:45:38

Brent- good job under less than ideal conditions today. Glad to hear you toughed it out and finished. Now get better and use this race as motivation to make other people your road kill next time!

From josse on Sun, Apr 06, 2008 at 11:04:24

I am sad that you can't run and train the way you so want and deserve to run. If I can help in any way let me know. I still think you rock!

From air darkhorse on Sun, Apr 06, 2008 at 11:11:40

Sorry to hear that you had a tough day. Was it the knee holding you back? I know that when my ankle was not 100% there was this subconscious shut down to run fast. Even when I was not feeling any pain. The cold sometimes has a way of shutting you down too.

From Clay on Sun, Apr 06, 2008 at 14:11:43

Brent I wish I could of met you at the race, and I am sad to see you struggling with your injury's:-( I know one thing from my struggles over the past 6 months with injury's and that is you will recover and you will be stronger than before, it just takes time and patience! I wish you the best and you will be in my prayers and my thoughts and one more thing; Never Ever Give Up!:-)

Be safe...

From Bonnie on Sun, Apr 06, 2008 at 17:07:13

Brent, I am sorry you had such a tough race, you played it smart taking it easy (as hard as it was) -- you have been running long enough to know you will be back stronger than ever. Take care of yourself over the next couple of weeks.

From Kerry on Sun, Apr 06, 2008 at 19:48:08

It's kind of a different perspective from the back of the pack, but I think it's an opportunity to really appreciate the effort and dedication of runners that sometimes don't get the recognition they deserve. Get better soon!
