3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over! 




Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.


Personal:

50 year old, trying to defy gravity and time

Used to be faculty at the University of Arizona (biostatistics).  Currently manager of the statistics and data management group for companion diagnostics (biomarkers) at Ventana Medical Systems, Inc. (Roche diagnostics).  We evaluate protein biomarkers that can be used to direct drug therapy that would be most effective based on individual characteristics (personalized medicine).

Just me and the FE ... another hour, another 650 calories.  Today I kept the incline lower and focused on keeping my strides/min at 190 (I actually got it up to 210).  Still couldn't get my HR above 120.  I am sure I am actually getting a much better "all over" workout these days, but to be honest I really don't care about overall health, while I  know I should, I just don't.  I care about running.  

The funniest thing is that I just am completely not used to gyms.  In a way the people watching is one thing that makes it sort of tolerable.  Now this is not a gym-gym it is a gym that is a wellness center for empolyees of UA hospital/medical center and patients that are recovering from stroke, heart attack, or something like that (most of the non-employees are over about 80 years old).  I only see the older folks when I work out in the morning, if I work out at night (last night I finished up about 8:30) then I see employees.  Anyway, there are still the 'peacocks', and the 'tired and overworked but trying to stay in good health'.  Pretty nice folks all and all.  Weirdest thing is that the 'gym' has windows on one side and from this window you can see a long covered seating area (looks like a long bus stop - at least 100 m long) - I thought it was a bus stop, but then I kept seeing patients walk by ... and then, I realized it is the smoking area.  So, if you want to have a smoke you have to sit there on your bench and watch a bunch of weirdo's in the gym watch you.  Pretty interesting ...

Do you prefer more strides/min or less? I thought 180 was the target, but you're the one with the coach, right?

Hi Jason, I don't know, I am new to this cross-training thing (I used to kick-box for exercise). I am just trying to keep my heart rate up. 180 was my target, but I thought faster would be better ...

My coach is a great guy, but he doesn't coach cross-training, only running ... he has broken down and hired an elite triathlete though to help him coach triathletes.

Yuk! Hang in there. That's what I do when I have to do the dreadmill; I focus on cadence. I just count and count and count. I don't trust the HR monitors though, they always seem off somehow. Do you run with one normally?

Oh the joy of cross training. That is funny about the smoker bench being located right where they will get stared in the face by healthy exercisers though. Good building planning if you ask me. Maybe it has helped some smokers put their cigarettes out early and feel inspired to take a walk instead.

Maybe a dumb question, but I'm trying to figure out what FE is. "feeling energetic?" "finding elephants?" "frequent ear aches?" "finding endorphins?" "feeling edgy?" "Friday's eggplant?"....am I getting close anywhere?

Things have gone very well so far Bonnie. And although I really don't like cross-training I still keep it in the program 2 or 3 days a week because I think it really helps. I keep things wild and crazy by mixing in a little "FB" and "FSS" with my "FE". But if it helps me so I can continue the "GR" (Glorious Running) injury/pain-free then it's bearable.

BTW I found that the MP3 player helps out a lot in the gym. Don't ever wear one running anymore but really helps me in the gym.
