3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over! 




Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.


Personal:

50 year old, trying to defy gravity and time

Used to be faculty at the University of Arizona (biostatistics).  Currently manager of the statistics and data management group for companion diagnostics (biomarkers) at Ventana Medical Systems, Inc. (Roche diagnostics).  We evaluate protein biomarkers that can be used to direct drug therapy that would be most effective based on individual characteristics (personalized medicine).

1:57:04 (1:00:39/56:25). I decided to take a break from mountain running and drove to the heavenly flat Rillito trail today.   I did not really check my splits much, except on the first few miles to make sure I wasn't running too fast.  One thing I have learned about summertime running is that once I overheat there is no recovering ... and it is sort of dangerous.  So, I kept it as easy as I could, and then just went with how I felt after I turned around.  It looks like I averaged about 9 min/mile on the way out and 8:25 on the way back.  Partly that was because there was a headwind on the way out and a tailwind after the turnaround, I pretty much felt that until the last 3 miles I was running about the same effort.  

It was a little cooler today (85F) than yesterday (mid 90s) ... so that was good.  However, I really did not feel good for most of this run.  I think I have been running most of my runs a little harder than usual of late, since my mileage is down and I am not doing any workouts I probably have a lot more energy and am not taking it as easy as I generally do on my recovery days.  I will need to work on this a little and concentrate more on slowing down and ensuring I am running easy enough.

I think it's a lot easier to run slowly on recovery days when you're training hard and really need the recovery. At least that's been my experience.

I need to learn to run in the heat like you do.

It is almost impossible to run easy when you are not balancing it with harder workouts. Maybe you should go by "easy effort" rather than absolute easy pace? Is that cheating? I always wonder if it is.

CiC - I don't think you need to get used to running in the heat - it is not that fun, I wouldn't do it if I did not have to. Luckily, I only have to live with it for 4 more months ;-).

Auntie, I always go by effort (I don't have a garmin). What I was trying to say is that my easy effort might not actually "that" easy, otherwise I wouldn't have felt so beat up on my run today. I think the real testimony as to what is "easy" is how well you recover - and if you feel you aren't recovered between runs, then something is up.

I thanked God I did not run today--it hit the 90s. I'm going to be watching your blog closely; I feel the same in the heat: if I start feeling sick, that's the fat lady singing. You are a smart heat runner. That's my goal this summer!

Tracy, I am simply lazy and even when we lived in Nashville, I found myself running my long runs in stupidly hot weather. Mainly, I slow down (a lot) -- it only takes one or two of those "dangerous" runs until you figure out how slow you have to go ;-). I also start drinking water early (long before I need it) - I try to drink every 5 miles or so for any runs longer than 70`. (so this means I have to run where there is water or do looped courses because I don't carry water - I am a minimalist runner).

KP - I don't really train by mileage, I train by time (e.g., coach tells me how many minutes to run and I estimate my mileage assuming I run 9 min/mile), so my mileage is just an estimate. I would guess my 10k-1/2 marathon training gives me about 70-75 miles/week and my marathon training would be around 80, but I am not very precise.

My coach writes everything in minutes, too, not miles. But I am attached to Garmin, so I run the minutes as miles. Makes it a whole lot more complicated than it really is.

To run slower, maybe you should get a "recovery run buddy" who is super pokey. KInd of the opposite of running with faster people to improve speed. lol
