3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over! 




Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.


Personal:

50 year old, trying to defy gravity and time

Used to be faculty at the University of Arizona (biostatistics).  Currently manager of the statistics and data management group for companion diagnostics (biomarkers) at Ventana Medical Systems, Inc. (Roche diagnostics).  We evaluate protein biomarkers that can be used to direct drug therapy that would be most effective based on individual characteristics (personalized medicine).

1:03:29.  I fought the prickly pear and I won ... no rash, no spines today! 

It is like a desert out here today ... getting hotter every day and we should be at our "normal" 108F by Monday.  Yuck.  At least right now it is tolerable in the morning. I am so glad it is Friday - although I don't really see much of a difference in weekdays and weekends right now, my grant is due in a month and I am freaking out (again).  I have two students who are working with me on projects that they will be presenting at national conferences this Fall, it is cool, but it takes a lot of time to get them started, unstuck and finished ;-).  

I am so excited for all the racers this weekend ... have a great time!

don't freak out! i am freaking out about my classes this semester. whew! it's going to be a tough summer. stats II being my biggest concern.

I don't know how you handle that heat Bonnie! Thanks for your training advice on my blog--it showed up in my e-mail but not on the blog--odd. Anyways I am sure you are right--it is very hard for me to understand what the balance is between hard, easy, and recovery. As you have once commented before, a coach would be beneficial(but costly :( Some days I am roaring to do speedwork and this and that and other days I want to do nothing but easy runs and just run miles. I have to say I really enjoyed getting out on the trails today and am thinking that is what I should do for the summer--run miles and race on trails and enjoy pressure-free nature time!

Hi April, well, I actually deleted my unasked for comments ... glad you did not mind my opinion ;-). I actually try not give unsolicited advice - especially since I am not sure I know very much anyway ;-). I like your idea though, it is really good to lay low a few months a year, you come back ready and roaring to race. There is no reason to "train" hard all year round, not that it means that you don't run fast every once in a while, just not "speedwork". It is all about timing -- 12-16 weeks is about all it takes to train up for a marathon ... doing marathon training before then doesn't help, and can actually hurt -- or at least that is what most of the most popular coaches (who write books) think.

Auntie -- I don't think they run, but they sure do think twice before they mess with me ;-)

OH Burt! I did not ignore you, I did not respond yesterday because I was at work (and trying hard not to listen to the chatter of donuts, which for the first time in over 20 years I am thinking of eating!).

When I read this yesterday I thought, "Geez Burt, that is so sweet, I have never been called a hot momma before" (though I have been called a "mean momma" before by this little tiny girl in DC who used to come and rampage through my apartment ... long story). I guess I thought I had responded, since I did in my mind ;-). And KP, it is nice to be friends!
