10K: 43:33 (2010)

10 mile: 1:13:35 (2009) (1:12:15 split in 1/2 marathon, 2011)

1/2 marathon: 1:34:31 (2011)

marathon: 3:19:15 (2013)

Short-Term Running Goals:

3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over!

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.

1:03:27.  Up the trail and down again.  90F ... summer is here, I doubt I will see any run under 85F again until November, so sad.

My leg hurts.  I need to go up to Phoenix and see the miracle worker soon I am afraid.

I hope you all have a great Friday and beginning of the weekend!

Bonnie: piggybacking on yesterday's Comrades discussion, irunfar.com has an article and interview with Wardian about it here:

http://www.irunfar.com/2010/05/michael-wardian-video-interview-2010-comrades-marathon.html

It also says in the article that you can follow people via the comrades website or follow a twitter feed throughout the race.

Should be interesting...

Thanks for the info Nevels, I am going to check out the website! I don't currently have twitter, but it would be worth it just to keep up with how things are progressing!! I wanted to do a little more research about Wardian -- I was telling Dean about him last night and realized I don't know much about him ;-). I did like the letsrun quote yesterday though, someone had said he been racing too much this year to be competitive and they said, "he hasn't run a marathon all week, he will totally rested" (I probably paraphrased a little there).

From Nevels on Fri, May 28, 2010 at 13:13:49 from 131.204.15.93

He has had quite a busy racing schedule so far this year, but he's done pretty well in all of them. I hope he smokes the course.

As far as twitter goes, I don't have an account either, but I can still follow along on the posts. All you've got to do is go to http://twitter.com/comradesm2010 and you can see the live updates throughout the race. (i don't think my life is interesting enough to warrant my getting a twitter account, but i'm certainly willing to follow along with real-time race progress...)

I'm sorry about the sore leg. I hope it's nothing serious.

Too bad about the heat also. I guess that's what you get for living in Arizona.

i just finished watching that video after about 47 interuptions... gotta love work! anyways, that was intersting. john, do you know why people like anton and jurek and other "well known" ultra guys aren't doing it?

From Nevels on Fri, May 28, 2010 at 19:52:30 from 75.143.94.111

aside from the fact that traveling to South Africa is not cheap, guys like Jurek and Anton run races to win and pick which races they do fairly meticulously (which is why it's so interesting and somewhat impressive to see Wardian run so many, but also likely why Jurek and Anton can beat him...) Jurek just ran the world 24-hour championship, and Anton just ran the Miwok 100k and is getting ready to run Western States.

thinking about it, this race does have a rather impressive lineup of "well known" runners with Wardian, Cox, Kimball, Semick, etc. (and i suspect that Cox, Kimball, and Semick all trained specifically for Comrades this year, forgoing other races in the same way that Anton and Jurek are forgoing Comrades)

not to mention that i suspect that Brooks and New Balance (Jurek and Anton's respective primary sponsors) have other ways they'd like to drop $10k...

Interesting discussion of Jurek and Anton, Nevels. I live in Jurek Country, and enjoy following his adventures.

Bonnie -Do people down there wear those ice bandanas around their necks in that heat, or are those things just a gimmick?

From Bonnie on Sat, May 29, 2010 at 13:56:30 from 64.119.33.134

Hi Sno, I tried to make my own last year, it lasted about 10 mins and by about 20 mins it was bone dry!! I havent seen anyone wearing one. I have seen people at Badwater wearing them, but they have support people who exchange them out for them every few mins. I do have friends that swear by stuffing ice cubes in pockets and sunblock shirts ... but I haven't tried that either. I find slowing down and thinking "cool" thoughts helps the most ;-).

Hope you are tapering well!! Liked your track workout!

From Nevels on Sat, May 29, 2010 at 14:08:30 from 75.143.94.111

Sno: I know some folks around here that wear the bandanas around their necks during some ultras, and I think it's mainly to keep the sun off of their necks. Adding water is a nice bonus, but, from what I have gathered, not the primary reason for wearing them.

I briefly experimented with it during my half of last year's Run Across Alabama for Elliott, and it did help. Think of it as kind of helping the same way that wearing a very light t-shirt helps keep your shoulders and back cooler on a blazing hot sunny day rather than going shirtless by simply blocking a little radiation.

From Snoqualmie on Sat, May 29, 2010 at 14:23:25 from 24.18.192.33

The ones I've seen at expos have a material in them that absorbs a ton of water and maybe stays frozen longer. Very little occasion to need one around these parts....

Bonnie, all my track workouts are dedicated to you.
