Short-Term Running Goals:

3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over!

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.

Today is my first day of doubles. I am giving my body one more chance to help me in my quest to IMPROVE my running! I want to add mileage but 55 mpw is the most my body (and my career) can take in singles - so I am going to add a couple of extra runs in the evening a couple days a week. I also seem to break down (mentally) when I get to the track so I am restructuring my training a bit to add more "fun" (ins and out) track workouts and adding more fartek and tempo training. Bad part of about doing this today is that I got about 2 hours of sleep last night, and feel pretty horrid overall. Stress does strange things to your body!

I am also admitting, publically, that I am also on a diet. I have lost 3-4 pounds and have about 3-4 more to go ... so far, it hasn't been too hard, I just have completely eliminated all snacks (even healthy ones) and am reducing my portions.

AM: 5.5 (49:29) - ran on BST towards Emmigration Canyon. Legs are feeling tired, probably because they are getting used to running the trails again. The short steep hills aren't bad, but the long steep grades are simply evil! I just keep thinking "stronger, faster".

PM: 3.5 (30:56) - ran same way as this morning, but almost a minute faster to the turn around. Legs felt good, but my body is pretty tired today (mainly the sleep/stress I think).

Two-a-days are a great way to get to the next level in your mileage. It also is a good way to avoid injury during the ramp up and increased mileage amount. Go slow with it but you will find it will help you improve.

I hope so Jeff!

Today was pretty easy to go slow, but I am going to really concentrate on slowing down a bit on most of my runs that are not "meant" to be fast ... I kind of "broke down" at the end of my last training cycle ... and I need to make sure it doesn't happen again.

From Maria on Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 13:49:31

Bonnie, be careful with the diet AND adding doubles for the first time. It seems to me that it's pretty stressful. You're cutting your calories and yet you're asking your body to do more work at the same time. It may work, but just watch out for symptoms of overtraining. I know that when I run a lot, I'm hungry a lot too!

Your training plan sounds good. It gets hard to balance running with career. Good luck with the running and the diet!

Hi Maria - well, I am not really adding overall mileage yet, for the next couple of weeks I will just get used to breaking up my runs ... I don't really think I am in any danger from under eating too much, but if I get hungry I will just have to find some healthy snacks to add, I can afford a few less calories.

Hi Shauna, yes it is very hard ... I am lucky in that I have a pretty flexible schedule in terms of being at the office, but I do have to spend a minimum of 50-60 hours on work (and I still can't get my work finished!!). Thanks for the luck!

Bonnie, have done many two a days, you may be different than me, but, I also cut back to only one hard day a week when increasing mileage.

Hi Brent, as usual, you are the smart/savvy one! I was planning on cutting back on really hard stuff (longer track intervals/tempo runs) to once every-other-week. I seem to just really burn out on hard stuff 2x week. I will do strides or short intervals every week though (just to work on turnover, something I am sorely lacking!).

I really toyed with the idea of coming out and jogging with you at the race tomorrow, but I have to work ... is there anyway you can do your run on Tuesday at 6:30 instead of 5:30? I might be able to make 5:30 but I am flying out of town that day and I wanted to spend a little time with Dean that morning. I will also be out of town next week at a conference!

Take care! Happy Father's Day!

Bonnie

Bonnie, if the jog race goes ok, yes, tuesday at 6:30 would work. I will let you know. The run tomorrow will be my longest in quite some time.

Stay Kool, thanks for the happy father's day, B of BS Rools out

Way to lose a few pounds! I know I need to as well... so far that's the only thing that is not working out in my plan... I eat too much!

Good luck with the doubles, I'm doing a bit of that myself and so far it seems to be working well!
