9:15 AM start, 65F some wind and sunny. Did two loops around Duke East Campus. It felt good. I wanted to go easy but I ended up doing it in 7:19 pace. I need to learn how to run slower in my easy runs and of course in my long runs but I can't seem to be able to do it. Any ideas?

I use my Garmin GPS a lot for that especially while racing so that I don't get too excited and start out too fast.

It has pace setting you can adjust and will beep at you if you go too fast or too slow.

Just an idea...........

Thanks for the advise Laurie. I definitely need to get myself one of these GPS gadgets - certainly before I run my first marathon. I'm waiting for a promotion at work toward the end of the year and if I get it I know what I am buying myself as a present...

You can just plot some courses out using the Course Tool (see the menu on the left after you log in). It will not only tell you how far you are going, but also will give you the correct pace adjusted for the elevation profile on each segment. I have Garmin 305, but I do not use it very much any more. Those things are not accurate enough for anything more serious than getting a rough idea of approximately how fast you are running on a previously unmeasured course. If you are running with three people each carrying his own GPS on the same course, and all three agree, then it is probably right. But you can never trust just one GPS. You can trust geographic measurement over the map a lot more since you do not depend on the signal accuracy any more.
