7AM, 72F, 80% humidity. My usual run of two loops around the golf course. This time I ran with my iPod which I almost never do. I only use it if I run at the gym. The ran was OK, I felt a bit tired but did an OK pace of 8:06.

My 5 mile race is a week from today (4th of July). I am going to do a long run on Sunday and run on Monday and Tuesday too but short an easy. I know you guys will say that there is no need to taper for a 5 mile race. I just recently moved to 6 days run a week and I think I can use a bit of extra rest before the race. I might do a really short run on Wednesday if I feel like it.

Yes, I have received similar advice from other bloggers as well. But reducing the intensity of my runs 2 days before the race and lowering the mileage some really helps me. My legs have more pop and snap. And if I had some minor aches they seem to disappear.

And since your race is on the 4th of July, a little "pop and snap" would be perfect.

It's going to be my first 5M race so I'm guaranteed a PR but I want to see if I can go below 37 and if yes by how much.

You still didn't tell me what kind of watch produces these kind of nice tables. Being a quantitative economist I'm obsessed with measuring and quantifying things...

On my race weeks, I often front load the miles- try to get 40-50% of my miles on Mon-Tue. Then do a medium run Wed, and real easy Thursday and Friday. So your plan is very reasonable and common- kind of a mini-taper.

I do remember you asking. Then I lagged a little on my blogging...and running.

I use a Garmin 305. It comes with a heartrate monitor. The 205 is the same watch, but no monitor. After the fact I realized I did not need the HRM and could have saved myself about 50 bucks. Now Garmin has a 405 out just in the last few months.

Anyway, the software included is where I get my tables from. I used to manually type in my splits. But I hated it on my long runs..took too long to type it out. So I tried making a screen capture of the table then pasting it into my blog. But then to do this I had to upload the image to a website that could host it. I use Picasa (by Google). Then I link to the photo and insert it in the blog.

Turns out this takes longer than typing it in manually. But I like the way it looks and decided to keep it up.

As for the watch. I just love it. There are so many functions..many of which I will NEVER use. But having the ability to record my distance on the fly is great. I can change a route at a moments notice or add on distance and always have an accurate record of my run.
