Nov 3 - The Dirt Monster 5mi (52:55)

2013 Races:

May - Pittsburgh Marathon (started, but DNF about the half way point)
June - Riverview 5k  - Bummed I missed signing up for this one. It's one of my favorites!
Sept - Gatorade/Steelers 5k. (Signed up!)
Sept - IKEA Montour Trail Half  (prob not, but leaving it on here)
Sept - The Great Race 10k (My Running 101 goal race)
Nov - Dirt Monster 5mi (Gotta do it again no matter what!)

Long-Term Running Goals:

Finish recovering from my injuries and build mileage.  That is all.

Personal:

My name is Wes, I'm married with two wonderful children. The nickname BaldNSpicy came from the fact that I have been balding for a (long) while now and spicy for my love of very spicy foods (Thai and extremely hot wings are my favorites).  If eating doesn't bring me near tears and leave me sweating, it's not worth eating.  :-)

Oh, and I'm also known for my doorags.

After about a mile, I was feeling so good, I decided tonight was going to be my "test" to see if I could do a 10k without stopping.  I've been debating signing up for the 8.1mi Just a Short Run at the end of March, and today is the deadline before the fee goes up.  Up to today, I just haven't been "feeling it" and didn't feel like my endurance was increasing at all.  I told myself this would be my long run and if I could do 6 without stopping, I'd be OK doing the 8.1 in a couple of weeks...so "I just put my Walkman on and said, 'I'd might as well kick it.'"

The route I took was pretty flat, but there were a few rolling type hills.  I just focused on relaxing and letting the miles tick away, not trying to push it at all.  I averaged a 9:05 pace, I think, so I was pretty happy about that all things considered.

Anyways, things are improving...and I guess I need to sign up for the race now...

Sign up! Nothing like having something to point towards.

That is a very safe distance to shoot for, considering you ran most of it today at a nice brisk pace. Good job.

Nice run, definitely ready to sign up. Do people laugh at you when you run with a walkman? I get weird looks sometimes, but then just turn up the volume on my Pump up the Jam cassette and focus.

Thanks guys, life's been busy so not as much running as I would like. Getting the race schedule finalized this weekend though with the family as we work out vacations, Pirates games, etc.

Not sure I'm going to do the 8.1mi, but still considering it. The big debate now is whether to shoot for the Pittsburgh Half on May 6 or go see my sister and do the Flying Pirate half in the Outer Banks, NC two weeks before. I've always wanted to run it and with them living close to there, it's a great excuse to go see them and have free room & board.

Joe - Yes, I do get weird looks, but not as much with my walkman. Usually, it's when I get bored with my playlist and strap on my turntable so I can scratch my own mix. It's a little harder to run, but it's entertaining for everyone around me. I'd bring my boom box, but it takes "mad D batteries"...
