Overall a good intro back to the track. I thought it had been longer but still a month since my last track workout. Met with the Black Sheep at East High. It was a fun natured workout with a retro theme. I tried my best to find something “retro” but Chad had me trumped with his short-shorts. The workout overall was some warm-up a mile and then six quarters. I felt I had a 5 min in me because of the 5K a few weeks back but I didn’t pace right and not ready for sustained speed. Chad was too nice to me in his blog entry. I had the first quarter and blew it. I was struggling finding pace. I left too much on my plate and overall wasn’t thrilled with my mile of 5:14, and not pacing correctly for Chad and Josh had me frustrated but they were cool about it. The quarters went a little better. I had fun with them and since I still had plenty in the tank after that mile, I really gave the last one a go, with plenty of help from Chad. It was nice ending with a 64, probably my fastest quarter in a few years. My calves are really punishing me now for it, but it was well worth it and it was great doing a workout and running with other people again. Speaking of other people, I saw Bill C with his “kids” at the zoo parking lot on the way in to work after the workout I yelled but I don’t think he saw me

I hope it wasn't when I was being a task master count for them as they did their push ups or crunchs. Tomorrow will be a fun day for us. We are doing a bike and run. Two man teams alternating bike or run. 5 miles out on jeremy ranch road and back. So each kid will get 5 miles running and 5 miles biking. It will be a big challenge for some. But it beats the same thing day after day.

No. They were sitting under a tree. The workout sounds fun, good crosstraining.

Adam - be very cautious with speed work. Wait at least 6 months to do it until you have a very solid base. It will pay off in a year.

Sasha, Thank you for the concern. I did take an additional month off speedwork after your initial suggestion. However, I found that I was missing something in my running without some fast leg turnover. Though I did mention that I’ve been injury prone, these bouts seem more tightly linked to mileage than intensity. Therefore, my current plan is to stick with 60-70 / wk (M-S) with one speed session per week. I’ve also been trying to run my recovery days on my own so I’m not tempted to go quicker. I’ve been pretty good doing the majority of my rest mileage at between 7:30-8:30. I’ve also been doing two stretch sessions per day, one after my run and one in the evening. I’ll try and keep this up through Oct and reassess then unless something comes up first.
