Personal:

I was a single mom.  Two times over.  We all survived, despite the fact that I make atrocious decisions.  Then, I met a man I didn't deserve.  And he loves me so much.  And I love him. We lived in sin and bought a house for two years then hired a judge and officially got married(to our great delight and also the delight of our mothers), then a month later he was diagnosed with cancer.  Well we survived all that and he's 100% fine now.  But, we're really out of shape and really busy with kids and jobs and running just isn't my priority and there's so many other layers to all of it, but I'm running anyway.  This is my failure blog now.  Just to log that one run a week if I snag it.
Somehow that matters and I want that run recorded.

On the elliptical trainer at 1AM after work again last night.  I pushed myself for just over an hour--I was able to make myself go longer(that thing really is torture), by pretending I was running, sometimes even racing.  I checked my heart rate a lot out of curiousity--it started out in the 140's, was in the 160's for most of the second half, and spiked at the end around 180 with the final push.  This actually correlates pretty close to my heart rate on runs.  I still can't walk correctly, not so much  because of pain, but because my ankle just doesn't seem to hold my weight right so I end up having to get the other foot back on the floor pretty quick--resulting in a limp I am unable to hide.  It has been one week since running.  I have tried to jog a few steps but my gait is so altered it is pointless.  I am trying to be more diligent about taking motrin to see if it helps.

I agree: ellipticals are awful, but if it helps out with healing and recovery, it might be worth the annoyance.

For your ankle, have you tried any stationary strengthening exercises? Every now and then I'll turn my ankles pretty badly on a trail, and part of what I do to recover and strengthen them for future use are the no-impact, stationary exercises like heel raises or simply balancing on one foot for a few minutes (eyes closed if you want a really good strengthening/balancing exercise). Once I can put more weight/impact on the ankles, I'll do exercises like line hops (pick an arbitrary line on the ground and simply hop back and forth over it both forward/backward ~25x and side to side ~25 times on either foot)

I hope that helps, and best of luck on your recovery.

Nevels--thanks for the suggestions on ankle exercises--I am interested in anything that will make me more stable and prevent future injuries. It would be nice just to walk without a limp, which I find embarassing, particularly at work. I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like ellipticals! It takes me more "perceived effort"--running feels much easier.
