Personal:

I was a single mom.  Two times over.  We all survived, despite the fact that I make atrocious decisions.  Then, I met a man I didn't deserve.  And he loves me so much.  And I love him. We lived in sin and bought a house for two years then hired a judge and officially got married(to our great delight and also the delight of our mothers), then a month later he was diagnosed with cancer.  Well we survived all that and he's 100% fine now.  But, we're really out of shape and really busy with kids and jobs and running just isn't my priority and there's so many other layers to all of it, but I'm running anyway.  This is my failure blog now.  Just to log that one run a week if I snag it.
Somehow that matters and I want that run recorded.

7:24 AP.  Tuesday's bad run is now a distant memory.  50 degrees=wings.  I started slow enough but ran into Kevin and picked it up a little and chatted for 6 miles before we parted ways around mile 9. After this I ran happily along.  It felt like ffortless floating and I kept drifting to sub 7 pace.  At mile 14 I just let it go and cruised the last 4 6:34, 6:25, 6:27, 6:28.  I felt totally in control during these miles.  too bad I wasnt racing a half, because I think that would have been my pace.  I felt so great today!  this kind of run is just what I needed.  I hope SGM is 50 degrees!

Holy Smokes! You were flying those last 4, & felt comfortable! Assuming those are KS miles, that pace will be really easy going downhill in St. George! Hmmm ... 2:xx:xx maybe? :)

From seeaprilrun on Fri, Sep 16, 2011 at 18:25:47 from 68.103.248.97

JG--scary thought, but a thought that has been rolling around in my head nonetheless...I would be...ecstatic.

From Kelli on Fri, Sep 16, 2011 at 19:19:31 from 71.219.67.175

You can totally do it. TOTALLY!!!! I would add 100 exclamation points, but I won't.

We are all praying for good weather. I am sure 50 is not gonna happen, but you never know! It did in 2008!!! You just never know in Utah. You guys went from 90 to 50 in the same week, though, so you must have weird weather, too!

I ran those paces yesterday and thought I was going to die-wish I was YOU!!!!! You are amazing. I think I am way more excited to see you and Julie go all out than I am to even race it myself. Save me a popsicle and a diet coke at the end!

From JG on Fri, Sep 16, 2011 at 19:27:49 from 71.59.27.33

Based on that run, I would say it is a very realistic thought! Have you done any downhill races? I love St. George, did it the last 2 years. I think you will love it too ... after you smoke the course! :)

I have a great excel pace calculator for St. George that calculates splits based on a weighted elevation factor, you put in your target finish time & it calculates all the splits for you. I can e-mail it to you if you would like, I found it very helpful.

From Kelli on Fri, Sep 16, 2011 at 19:31:15 from 71.219.67.175

OH, JG, I thought about that the other night and meant to tell her about it, but I am a flake! Glad you are not!!!! It is a great little tool. I am never close to the times it says, I am a weird (or stupid) runner, but I know it has helped other people big time. Jose followed it to a T last year, and then had a little left the last two miles and was able to fly when the rest of us were dying of heat exhaustion. ;o)

From JG on Fri, Sep 16, 2011 at 19:48:53 from 71.59.27.33

Kelli, you probably have the same one, I found it online on some discussion forum the first year I ran St. George, it is by a guy named Scott Zimmerman. I did not really follow it to a T, as I guess you would have to print out the splits and carry them with you, as nearly every mile changes ... but it certainly helped my mental preparation immensely, and I had a good idea of where I could bank some time & where and how much I could let the pace drop off without freaking out about it! :)

Things got a little hot last year the last half, but I would say it was pretty ideal in 2009!

From Kelli on Fri, Sep 16, 2011 at 19:54:33 from 71.219.67.175

Jose wrote it on his arm in permanent marker! I did the same thing you did--just kind of looked at it and where I would slow down and should speed up. It helped me to know where to be on the UPhills! We actually made our own pace bracelet in 2008 and "laminated" it with packaging tape, but the rain had it all washed out by the 5th mile or so!

2009 was a great year. Let's hope for that again. Are you running it this year?

From JG on Fri, Sep 16, 2011 at 20:19:08 from 71.59.27.33

Oh Kelli, how I wish I was, I love it out there! I really struggled the whole month of April on whether I would enter the lottery or not, it is a little bit of a costly trip from Atlanta, and since I got my BQ there last year, I decided to take a year off ... but I will be back! Fortunately I found a similar downhill race in North Carolina Oct. 22, so I will go for my sub 3 there ... or at least 3:05!

April, sorry we did not mean to hijack your blog, but seriously, pm Kelli or I to get the pace calculator ... it will help you, whether you follow it to a T or not! :)

From SlowJoe on Fri, Sep 16, 2011 at 21:01:39 from 75.109.104.60

Yeah I agree, toss in some downhill and you could very well just coast to sub-3. Hopefully it is nice and cool there this year, but either way you're in for a very memorable day.

From Kelli on Sat, Sep 17, 2011 at 00:21:22 from 71.219.67.175

YEP, she is. Cause she gets to meet me (and beat me). ;o)

St George will miss you, JG. It is my favorite race next to Boston (but nothing could beat the Boston experience!)

From seeaprilrun on Sat, Sep 17, 2011 at 00:58:28 from 205.172.12.229

I can't remember who suggested it but I have looked at the Zimmerman splits thing here a few weeks ago. I honestly don't know if sub-3 wil happen or not, but I am going to start on pace as if it was a possiblity and see how I feel and what happens. I don't know how well my quads will take the downhill and I don't know how I will react to altitude. It is all a mystery. No matter what it is going to be a memorable trip and I get to meet bloggers who I've "known" for 3 years now! I can't believe it is only 2 weeks away!!!

From flatlander on Sat, Sep 17, 2011 at 11:31:58 from 76.31.26.153

That is a great run, congratulations. Really hard to predict how you will react to altitude. St. George is much more moderate altitude-wise than some of the other Utah marathons. Don't know what your altitude is, but if you are training at 2000 feet it probably won't make much difference. For me it makes a little differencde, and ironically the dry air dehydrates me toward the end of the race and creates stomach issues. In my opinion it is a little slower than a sea-level course, but most people say it is faster. I have done almost no hill work other than back-packing, so I am probably in trouble.

From Kelli on Sat, Sep 17, 2011 at 16:34:20 from 71.219.67.175

April, I think you have prepared really well for the up and down hill of this race. You are ready. If all goes well, this will be your race! You are one of the most well prepared people I know heading in to this thing! Let's hope for good weather, cooperative hammies and stomach, and NOW WORRIES! Go for it. ;o)

From JG on Sat, Sep 17, 2011 at 16:40:13 from 71.59.27.33

April, you will be surrounded by people that will give you good advice on the course. I ran a negative split both years I ran it, so o wouldn't worry of you fall off pace miles 8-12, that is a tough stretch but when you crest the hill, the fun begins and there is plenty of downhill to make it up if your quad hold up! Sounds like you have a great attitude and approach, the rest will take care of itself. Enjoy the scenery & company!

From Jody on Sun, Sep 18, 2011 at 12:39:30 from 75.141.131.35

April - you will do great in SG. Use the weighted pace calculator - it is fantastic. With SG you have to negative split, so don't worry about holding back the first half and then let it loose the second. The last few miles are usually hot but since they changed the course a few years ago it is much, much better. And the sooner you finish the cooler it is :)

It is my home town and I have the best memories - I will be there in spirit cheering you on!

From JulieC on Sun, Sep 18, 2011 at 20:09:26 from 207.108.177.138

your quads won't care until after the race, so push as hard as you can downhill : D. Zimmerman is the calculator I sent you. I am glad you looked it up : D. I am wondering if I care about wearing a watch or not but I guess I will put it in hide mode again until the last 10k. see you soon? did you get the address?

From seeaprilrun on Sun, Sep 18, 2011 at 23:06:10 from 205.172.12.229

Jody--I'm looking forward to this negative split...not something I've experienced in a marathon before. Julie I hope you are right about my quads no caring-I tend to have unhappy quads at the end of my marathons but hopefully the hill training has made my legs stronger this time around. I got the address and I am ready to go! Less than two weeks i can't believe it!
