As I was leaving for the race I had the feeling that I was forgetting something.  Thought that as long as I had shoes, shorts and singlet I was fine.  As I pulled up to the bus pickup I realized that it was my watch that I forgot.  Oh well, what are you going to do.  I also realized that I didn't have a bag for the clothing drop.  I rummaged through my car and found my daughter's Hannah Montana back pack so at least I had something to put my clothes in (I'm sure I looked real cool).  I ran 1/2 mile before getting on the bus just to see how my legs felt.  After being dropped off at the starting line I ran 2 more miles with Cody, Jon, Logan and Clyde.  Met a lot of other bloggers at the start (Clay, Kim, Tom, Jossee).  I knew Tom and I were planning on running a similar pace so I was hoping to stay close to him so I could get mile splits.  First mile was in 6:00 and second mile was 6:13 (I think).  At this point my hamstring started to flare up and Tom started to pull away.  He was gaining about 2 seconds per mile on me.  After mile 5, Tom had a 14 second lead on me but I was starting to make up a little ground on him.  I think that I caught up to him somewhere around mile 7.  He said we were averaging 6:14/mile at that point.  This is also where the course gets ugly.  The downhill turned into rolling hills and we now had a pretty good headwind.  The headwind continued from here to the end of the race and was a real factor.  It also seemed to get colder at this point.  I wished that I would have kept the long sleeve shirt on.  My hamstring was getting worse and the taylor's bunion on my right foot was really bothering me.  I considered just backing off the pace and coasting in but decided to just keep plugging along until the end.  I was caught in no-mans land for the last half of the race which made the wind that much more difficult.  Ended up finishing in 1:24:10 (or something close to that).  Not too far off of a PR but considering the course and conditions, it was a PR effort.  There were times that I felt I could have pushed harder but there were also times that I felt really spent.  I guess that means that it was a good effort.  It was cool to see the huge group of bloggers cooling down.  I opted not to join them since my leg and foot were causing me grief and I have a marathon next week.

Awesome race! That was a pr effort for sure since Hobble Creek is a faster course.

Great race Andy! PR effort for sure. Didn't know you had a marathon coming up so soon, which one is it?

From josse on Sat, Apr 05, 2008 at 14:02:51

Great job on the race. The condition got bruttal there at the end. Cody said about an extra min. for the head wind.

From Cody on Sat, Apr 05, 2008 at 15:13:01

Andy,

Way to run in those tough conditions. Keep up the training and you could PR at Ogden. Yep, even faster than your SGM time. Oh, and nice backpack!

From Kim on Sat, Apr 05, 2008 at 17:42:25

Great to meet you Andy! You ran a good, smart race! And you did look cute with the Hannah Montana bag! That gets you the Dad of the year award from the daughter and that's even better than the great race!

From Tom on Sat, Apr 05, 2008 at 18:19:56

Andy you certainly ran a great race. PR effort for sure, worth a sub-1:20 at Hobble creek I would think. Wish I would have been wiser on my pacing and mental toughness so I could have hung with you longer and finished strong like you did.

Looks like you have another PR year ahead.

Andy I'll have to adimit that's pretty funny about the back pack. I saw you up at the start with that one and I thought... hum that's an interesting bag for a race. I thought that maybe it was a good luck charm or something. Good job nonetheless.

Excellent PR effort! And a marathon next week- wow! The Hannah Montana backpack has me laughing- as a mom of an 8 yr old girl, I can appreciate that! Get those legs & feet recovered for your marathon next week!

From James on Sat, Apr 05, 2008 at 23:21:24

Nice run today.! Are you doing Ogden?

From Clay on Sat, Apr 05, 2008 at 23:26:36

Nice race Andy! Man you ran that whole race by feel, that is true talent.

From Jon on Sun, Apr 06, 2008 at 10:34:00

Good job today, Andy. That headwind really kicked all of us, but maybe running by feel rather than time helped you out! Are you doing the 30k, too?

Loved the backpack, by the way. I bet you were able to find it real easily!

From Andy on Sun, Apr 06, 2008 at 12:29:04

Jeff - I am running the Utah Valley marathon on Saturday.

James - Yes, I am running the Ogden marathon.

Jon - I only paid for the 5k, 10k and 1/2 marathon but Strider's signed me up for the entire series. I didn't run the 10 miler so I am out of the running for any awards (would be in 2nd place in my AG right now). I wasn't planning on running the 30k but am starting to consider it depending on how well I recover from Utah Valley.

Great job at the Striders HM.

Good luck this weekend in Provo!

Great race Andy! I'd be lost without my watch during a race, but it worked out well for you anyway. Run well at the marathon Saturday!

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Apr 08, 2008 at 11:08:47

This is a breakthrough race. I would say adjusting for the condition, worth about 1:18 in Hobble Creek, and about 2:42-2:43 in St. George.
