Ran 3 relatively flat miles then 1.5 miles up Eagle Ridge drive.  It is a 700 foot gain in elevation over the 1.5 miles.  It's a lot of work going up and too steep to run efficiently coming down.  It is a great workout, though.  Still no new shoes.  Hopefully I will have time to get them this afternoon.

I think Eagle Ridge is a 12% grade right, that is crazy steep!

Sounds like a quad thrasher coming down, but it would be good prep for all those UT marathons that come out of the canyons.

Speaking of preparing for utah marathons that run down canyons, just how much downhill training would be necessary for such a race. I'll be running the UVM in June. Would I be ok doing one or two short downhill runs per week or should I dedicate one long run each week to going downhill? In '09 I ran TOU and my legs were trashed the next day, but two weeks later after running SGM, I was hardly sore at all. Perhaps I've answered my own question.

When I am training for a downhill marathon, I have one run a week that is 5 miles up and 5 miles down. You need to be very careful when you introduce downhill running into your training because it can be very hard on your legs and too much too soon will cause injury.

I agree. One run a week with some downhill running should be enough, but like Andy said, build into it slowly to avoid injury.
