On tap for today was a 5 mile tempo run.  It was cold this morning and I was feeling some negative energy so I was concerned about being able to handle a tempo run.  Warmed up with 3 miles (8:41/mile).  My splits for the tempo miles were: 6:22, 6:26, 6:31, 6:24, 6:28.  My concern for not doing well caused me to push too hard during the first mile and run it too fast.   I never could get comfortable and felt like I was forcing the pace the entire run.  I let the pace really slip during the third mile and overcompensated on the 4th.  Mile 4 is also along a stretch of road that I hate and I convinced myself that I was running too slow which caused me to push the pace.  For a minute, I considered taking a break after the 4th mile but realized that these are the feelings that are important to push through to learn that, despite the fatigue, I can still run at a decent pace.  Pace felt erratic and took too much mental effort but it was a good learning experience.  Cooled down with 2 easy miles (8:47/mile).

Total Time: 1:15:47 (7:35/mile)

GREAT mental fortitude! Mondays are tough for me. GREAT JOB breaking thru the cold, the negative energy and found it a good learning experience. Your training always inspires and motivates me. Have a wonderful week! :)

Andy, It was colder today than it has been so it was probably harder to get those muscles moving, so you have to factor that in. Your doing great running is alot more than just fast times, building mental strength is just as important as running fast splits, So I think you had a great run!

I agree, getting out in this weather this late in the winter to try to run fast takes some strong mental focus! Great run!

Very nice tempo run. I love how you worked it out.

If you want to talk erratic paces, you should see the slits from my run in the wind this morning. You can definitely tell which miles were run into the wind.

Nice running Andy, especially on such a cold morning.

Ditto what everyone else said. I think this was a great cold morning run Andy.

Do you realize there was only 9 seconds between your slowest and fastest miles? -- I wouldn't call that erratic.:) Nice tempo run, Andy. Don't you just wish every day could be 60 and sunny, and no wind? (but then we'd be spoiled, and if we encountered bad conditions during a race, we wouldn't know how to handle it) Nice toughness working past the voice that told you to quit!
