Personal:

I am originally from Knoxville, TN and moved to SLC with Jake in 2010. I started racing in 2011 and had some great success before a major injury hit me in July 2012. I had athletic pubalgia surgery in May 2013...then again in Sept 2014 and am still trying to get back to my old self. Although running is my true passion, I love doing pretty much anything active outdoors - backcountry skiing, backpacking, biking, etc.

I've been running for the Saucony Team since 2011. I enjoy representing the brand and really do believe they make the best shoes :)

I work as a Quality Engineer for BD Medical in Sandy.

MRI Appointment tomorrow evening. I pushed for an MRI of both the pelvis and the spine, but my doctor is convinced it's a spine issue so no pelvis for now. This concerns me for several reasons - 1) sometimes MRI of the spine shows something that is not the cause of the pain 2) all the pain is in the right hip and that area is not even being imaged 3) it could be multiple things and we miss it. I voiced these concerns (through a nurse of course b/c the doctor couldn't give me two minutes on the phone). But hopefully he's right and the spine MRI is all I need.

This sounds all too familiar.. My Mom had hip issues and it was not until she voiced her thoughts through a nurse that she was able to get an MRI and get it pinned down.

I hope you get some relief or at least a correct diagnosis soon.

Man, I am sorry Andrea. Good luck tomorrow.

If makes me mad that doctors don't listen to what we as a patient wants. I would think if to be better to do both areas so you don't have to go back and get another MRI if he is wrong. hope you do get answers.

Good luck tomorrow. I hope your profile pic changes soon.

Thanks for the support. The more I think about it, the more mad I get. It's a diagnostic test - it causes no harm to me or to him and I'm very concerned about this area. No matter what the lumbar spine test shows, I will be worried about the pelvic/hip area and if it would show something else that is causing problems. Sometimes I think doctors are so cocky and sure of themselves that they don't listen to the patients who are the ones that feel the pain and have the problems! It's not like I'm asking for drugs, medicine, etc. that I don't need - I just want an accurate diagnosis! I could rant about this all day but it just gets my blood boiling so I need to think about something else.

I sure hope you get some answers!! Good luck!

How frustrating. I hope you get an accurate diagnosis tomorrow so that you can get on the road to recovery.

Thinking about you Andrea. I really hope you can get some answers and get on the road to recovery.

You're right Andrea. If you think it would be helpful to have the MRI somewhere else, or in addition to the spine, then tell the Dr. or nurse. It's your money and your request.

From Toby on Tue, Sep 04, 2012 at 21:49:54 from 199.101.229.6

So frustrating! One of the things I've realized with injuries (and other medical stuff) is that it is a process of elimination. Nope it is not this...lets try this....only part of that ...so try this....and on and on. And it can be a long process with lots of detours. Good luck tomorrow.

So sorry to hear about this and the frustration with the improper ordering of the diagnostic test. I hope things work out and you're able to find some answers! Best of luck to you, Andrea!

From Tara on Wed, Sep 05, 2012 at 09:36:49 from 75.169.139.237

Ugh! That is annoying. Hopefully the nurse has it wrong and not the doc. Tell him you want your whole body done instead. The hip and spine might seem more enticing after that:)

From Jake K on Wed, Sep 05, 2012 at 09:48:41 from 155.100.226.191

That's a GREAT idea, Tara. Play it like the ski resorts do with the forest service. Ask for something you really don't want, but its so ridiculous that it makes the "concession" seem like a totally reasonable idea.

"We're going to build a roller coaster on Mt Superior and make it span across the road"

"No way Jose"

"OK we'll just build some more alpine slides and a tram to the top of Twin Peaks instead"

Try the Snowbird method, Andrea. Ask for a whole body MRI, a soothing massage, 40 cases of diet dew, and a prescription for a year's supply of M&Ms. If the doctor says no to that, be willing to concede for "just" a pelvic MRI.

From Andrea on Wed, Sep 05, 2012 at 09:55:40 from 72.37.244.100

I would be very very surprised if the pain I'm feeling is coming from a disc problem. I'm trying my hardest to give the doctor the benefit of the doubt - he does have a lot of experience. But if it shows nothing, as I expect, we're going to have a little talk (aka me yelling at him) and then I'm getting a new doctor.

From josse on Wed, Sep 05, 2012 at 09:59:22 from 70.196.193.215

The bottom line is its your body, your money and you do have the right to say what you do and don't want. they make you think you don't. push for the pelvis.
