Personal:

I am originally from Knoxville, TN and moved to SLC with Jake in 2010. I started racing in 2011 and had some great success before a major injury hit me in July 2012. I had athletic pubalgia surgery in May 2013...then again in Sept 2014 and am still trying to get back to my old self. Although running is my true passion, I love doing pretty much anything active outdoors - backcountry skiing, backpacking, biking, etc.

I've been running for the Saucony Team since 2011. I enjoy representing the brand and really do believe they make the best shoes :)

I work as a Quality Engineer for BD Medical in Sandy.

AM - JAKJAF Run, Kevin joined us today. SH Park-Tanner Park-Wasatch Blvd-1900E-SH Park. It's a very challenging run, especially when running with the fast guys and having a workout the night before. Great workout and I'm glad to get in a medium-long run during the week.

So I went to an orthopaedic specialist during lunch about my chronic SI joint/back pain. After examination and imaging, he confirmed that it was SI joint dysfunction (although I do have a bone spur at the bottom of the joint and my L5 vertebrae is crooked, of course!). I was pretty sure that the SI joint was to blame, but I'm no doctor and wanted to make sure I didn't have any serious mechanical issues (stress fracture, disk rupture, etc). The treatment is basically focused around strengthening the deep abdominal muscles and adductors/abductors. I have been doing this on a regular basis, but the doctor said it wasn't enough :o( with the amount I'm running. No magic cure - bummer. If it's still as bad as ever in 4-6 weeks, he'll do injections into the joints.

You guys are amazing. I could barely break a 9 min pace this morning after my speedwork yesterday. Great work!

Fantastic workout last night, and when you couple that with your hilly run today.... Wow!

From RAD on Wed, May 02, 2012 at 13:56:58 from 98.202.23.178

what doesn't kill us, just makes us stronger :) that is what I have to say to myself to get through hills! Nice work!

From Tara on Wed, May 02, 2012 at 14:45:24 from 159.212.71.200

Sheesh! I hope you get some relief soon or at least learn to deal with it the best way possible. You'd never know by the way you run. I whole new look at tolerating and fighting through pain!

From Jake K on Wed, May 02, 2012 at 14:50:51 from 155.100.226.54

The good news is that it isn't something major. The bad news is that it will require doing lots and lots of boring ancillary exercises to relieve the pain. But that really isn't bad news, compared to if it were a stress Fx, disc problem, etc.

From Andrea on Wed, May 02, 2012 at 14:51:26 from 67.182.215.126

And guess who gets to do all that ancillary work with me?!?

From Jake K on Wed, May 02, 2012 at 14:52:39 from 155.100.226.54

Not me!

Welcome to my world of the past 20 years. What exercises are you supposed to be doing? I need to find a good regiment to fix the same issue.

From Lily on Wed, May 02, 2012 at 18:43:03 from 74.82.64.32

I pretty much knew you had the same si joint problem as me. It isn't fun! I do deep abdominal exercises weekly. As well as my adductors and abductors. An ex NFL player that works out at my gym taught me some plyos to work those too. When I blog: 'strength training', that's a big part of what I do each week. I stretch my hips and torso every nigh too. I have to say the biggest saving grace has been my E-power machine. Last summer my back teetered on the verge of re-injury. (The reason I didn't do a lot of speedwork last summer). My e-power seemed to help my back issues resolve. I'm so glad! I know its pricey but I'd look into investing in one.

I'm really happy you got a solid diagnosis. Now you can formulate a plan of action rather than shooting in the dark like you've been forced to do the past 6 months. Did he say that was the reason for the hamstring pain? I suspected it was an SI joint causing the pain in the hamstring a while back.

From Andrea on Wed, May 02, 2012 at 20:28:15 from 67.182.215.126

Dan - I don't want to hear that!

Lily - I'm looking into the e-stim...thinking about making the plunge.

Hamdog - Yeah, the hamstring and the back pain are both associated with that SI joint dysfunction. At least now I know what I need to do to relieve all the symptoms!

From runningafterbabies on Thu, May 03, 2012 at 10:12:45 from 71.195.219.247

Andrea - I would love to hear what these exercises are. It's unfortunate that no matter how fit we are or how much running we do, there will still be weak muscles that wreak havoc on our bodies.
