Personal:

I am originally from Knoxville, TN and moved to SLC with Jake in 2010. I started racing in 2011 and had some great success before a major injury hit me in July 2012. I had athletic pubalgia surgery in May 2013...then again in Sept 2014 and am still trying to get back to my old self. Although running is my true passion, I love doing pretty much anything active outdoors - backcountry skiing, backpacking, biking, etc.

I've been running for the Saucony Team since 2011. I enjoy representing the brand and really do believe they make the best shoes :)

I work as a Quality Engineer for BD Medical in Sandy.

AM - Horsepark loop 4.4 miles. I wore my compression shorts because my hamstrings have been tight recently. The shorts helped a lot - I'll probably wear them every day for a while.

PM - 5 miles around Sugarhouse Park + Murphy's neighborhood.

Do you ever use a foam roller? I have found them to be super effective on my hamstrings. Those exercises James mentioned also seem to help.

My hamstrings were a little tight this morning as well and that reminds me that I should be wearing my compression shorts. Sometimes it is so easy to forget about the little things.

Yup, my lunch break will consist of James's hamstring exercises and your hip exercises...not looking forward to it!

on the leg press machine i do 30-35 pounds, one leg at a time, very slowly, 3 sets of 10 on each leg, continuous. it helps a ton in loosening up my hamstrings, which in turn helps my lower leg woes feel better as well.

From Andrea on Mon, Apr 30, 2012 at 12:05:44 from 72.37.171.52

Allie - well if you are at 30-35lb, I'll start with 10lb.

What compression shorts do you wear? I've been wanting to get some, but with so many options I get overwhelmed and never make a decision. Hope your ham strings feel better!!

From Andrea on Mon, Apr 30, 2012 at 12:48:10 from 72.37.171.52

I have two pairs - CEP and Zoot. Both are great. The CEP are a little more comfortable in the waist (and don't squeeze my bladder as much) but the Zoot ones seem a little more effective because they are tighter. That might just be due to different sizing though.

darn hammies. I hope those compression shorts work wonders! Looks like you're having a great mini recovery from Saturday.

Thanks, I'll look at those :)

I hope your hamstrings feel better after wearing compression shorts for a while. I wear compression shorts all the time, but they only go to about mid-thigh.

Hey Andrea - Got some blood work done and can't find that darned iron article you have referred to. Do you have the link? Among other things, my ferritin is wackedy wacked. No wonder steak smells so good :)

http://camilleherron.com/2011/05/25/the-little-things-iron-supplementation/

Read the review article on iron suplementation in distance runners that is linked on this page.

This is also interesting - http://runningwritings.blogspot.com/2011/11/ferritin-hemoglobin-and-iron-deficiency.html

What are your ferritin levels?

From runningafterbabies on Tue, May 01, 2012 at 08:19:35 from 71.195.219.247

I love compression shorts! Andrea - you mentioned on Sat. the CEP ones are a little looser. Are they your regular size or did you go up one size?

Iron sidebar. Red meat is yummy! Lulu, lets get those ferratin levels up. An interesting article I read by Pfitzinger talked about taking Vitamin C when eating red meat too to aid absorbtion. I always did that with my liquid supplement, but didn't consider doing it when I was eating a burger or steak.

From Lulu Walls on Tue, May 01, 2012 at 08:40:30 from 155.100.212.98

Thanks for the links Andrea! My ferritin was a whopping 11 - eek. My hematocrit was normal at 41 though.

Melody - Thanks, I will try to drink some OJ while eating my lentils to aid in absorption. Sadly I am a vegetarian...
