Personal:

I am originally from Knoxville, TN and moved to SLC with Jake in 2010. I started racing in 2011 and had some great success before a major injury hit me in July 2012. I had athletic pubalgia surgery in May 2013...then again in Sept 2014 and am still trying to get back to my old self. Although running is my true passion, I love doing pretty much anything active outdoors - backcountry skiing, backpacking, biking, etc.

I've been running for the Saucony Team since 2011. I enjoy representing the brand and really do believe they make the best shoes :)

I work as a Quality Engineer for BD Medical in Sandy.

AM - Finally broke the 8 min/mile barrier today, so I should be recovered enough from the race last weekend for a hard tempo run tomorrow.

PM - 2 miles easy.

Short article about Kim Smith and her struggles with the marathon . She is running the marathon at the Olympics and at NYC, and I really hope that she is able to perform to her abilities this year!

“It’s still a scary distance to me because there are so many other factors that come into it than just running,” Smith said. “I am worried all of the time about drinking enough, or having to stop to go to the bathroom. You just don’t know what is going to happen in a marathon. There is more of an unknown than with the other distances.”

Smith says she wrestles every day with internal questions as to why she has had such difficulty. “Maybe there is something about me that’s just not right,” Smith said. “Maybe it’s going to happen every time I run a marathon, that it won’t be as good as how I have run the half-marathon. Take someone like Ryan Hall, who hasn’t really had a bad marathon. I haven’t had any really great marathons. Maybe it’s my body type. Maybe I’m too skinny. In your head, you start thinking about all of the things that could be wrong. I just don’t know."

Gotta love cracking the 8 minute barrier. Now you can imagine how Roger Bannister felt!

From RAD on Fri, Apr 27, 2012 at 09:48:36 from 98.202.23.178

Oh, how that article resonates with me!! I feel that exact same way (except the too skinny part!). Thanks for sharing Andrea, it is nice to see that even elite runners feel like I do.

Congrats on finally feeling that skip in your step.

From Rachelle on Fri, Apr 27, 2012 at 10:16:09 from 199.190.170.24

I'm with Rachel in that this definitely resonates with me. The marathon is such an unpredictable race and something that is truly hard to perfect even with the best training possible. I am excited to read the rest of the article. Thanks for sharing.

Are you running another half this weekend? You crazy animal!?!

From Andrea on Fri, Apr 27, 2012 at 13:37:33 from 72.37.244.100

Well, I got suckered into running the Thanksgiving Point Half BUT I'm only doing it as a marathon pace workout (or slower).

From Lulu Walls on Fri, Apr 27, 2012 at 13:46:14 from 155.100.212.98

I will believe that when I read the report :)

From Jake K on Fri, Apr 27, 2012 at 13:52:55 from 155.100.226.54

The rule for tomorrow is no miles under 6:20! We'll see if she can stick to it... with all the dinosaurs and whatnot :-)

From Andrea on Fri, Apr 27, 2012 at 13:56:23 from 72.37.244.100

You act like running under 6:20 for me is easy! I wish it was!!

From Carina on Fri, Apr 27, 2012 at 13:59:06 from 204.15.86.83

You'll probably win :) Maybe I'll see you there, my eight year old is running the mile kids run!! I totally agree about the marathon, it's such an unpredictable race. I always think, "I can only do as good as I can given the circumstances."

From Jake K on Fri, Apr 27, 2012 at 14:02:40 from 155.100.226.54

I wish there was an "adult" heat for the kids mile. I'd rather do that! :-)

Actually if we just based it off maturity level, I'm sure they'd let me run...

From Lily on Fri, Apr 27, 2012 at 15:35:00 from 67.199.178.210

I hope Kim does well this year too. She is very talented.

About tomorrow. Do you feel like your legs are good to go? I know you said you are just planning to pace it but I'd love to see you power that thing! :)

From Lily on Fri, Apr 27, 2012 at 15:36:50 from 67.199.178.210

I wish there was an adult one mile too. I love a good fast mile. :) I say we create our own 1 mile race and hold it on the salt flats.

From Fritz on Fri, Apr 27, 2012 at 18:23:05 from 65.116.116.6

Jake, What are the consequences, besides working harder, of running a sub 6:20 mile? Injury, monetary or food related?

Have a great race!

From Jake K on Fri, Apr 27, 2012 at 18:31:45 from 67.182.215.126

I don't want her to get too tired b/c I have some big plans for bc skiing on Sunday :-)

From BrandonD on Fri, Apr 27, 2012 at 21:28:04 from 166.250.163.197

Thanks for the comment on my blog, you and Jake are so inspiring. I deleted my comment after reading the whole article but yes a positive attitude and sound mental training to me are the biggest part of race prep :). Dwelling, worrying, and entertaining doubt is not productive IMO.

And yep, I'm trying to pr next weekend plus i need a gauge for the final push to Utah Valley full. All the best to you in your training. One of these days I'll have to get to SLC to share some miles with the awesome group up there.

From Alana on Fri, Apr 27, 2012 at 22:03:18 from 69.20.189.206

What a great article. It's nice to know even super fast runners have those worries. :)

From MichelleL on Fri, Apr 27, 2012 at 23:34:20 from 42.98.202.215

That is a tough course, but race magic will probably make 6:20 feel easier than you think, Andrea. That was a great article. I love how the 2:25 marathon is such a mediocre time for her :D We all want to be a bit faster, don't we?
