Personal:

I am originally from Knoxville, TN and moved to SLC with Jake in 2010. I started racing in 2011 and had some great success before a major injury hit me in July 2012. I had athletic pubalgia surgery in May 2013...then again in Sept 2014 and am still trying to get back to my old self. Although running is my true passion, I love doing pretty much anything active outdoors - backcountry skiing, backpacking, biking, etc.

I've been running for the Saucony Team since 2011. I enjoy representing the brand and really do believe they make the best shoes :)

I work as a Quality Engineer for BD Medical in Sandy.

AM - 4.5 miles, a couple of those with Jake. Felt surprisingly good this morning after the workout yesterday except for my new sunburn!

PM - 5 miles in the Sugarhouse area.

Interesting info. about how much pro runners make - pretty sad, in my opinion.

- There is wide variation across each event and within the highest rankings. In aggregate though, combining all T&F events:

  • Approximately 50% of our athletes who rank in the top 10 in the USA in their event make less than $15,000 annually from the sport (sponsorship, grants, prize money, etc.) and
  • Approximately 20% of our athletes in top 10 in the USA in their event make more than $50,000 annually.
  • Athletes outside of a top 10 USA ranking, other than some sprinters, milers, and distance runners, can expect to face very limited (if any) income support.

For the amount of effort they put in, runners, triathletes, and most cyclists are definitely low on the income ladder. The average American would apparently prefer to watch oversized people throw balls around than watch little people bike and run for hours.

Seems like we're doing in right (financially) by being amateurs! :-)

The average american would rather watch someone play cards on TV than run a 5K

Incredibly interesting. I have no idea how so many runners don't work real jobs. What do they live off of?

"Quit playing with your balls...RUN!" -best t-shirt ever!

I agree whole heartedly with Fritz and Jake. Americans are lazy and very good "Uncle Ricos" (if you don't know who Uncle Rico is I can explain...no, just watch Napoleon Dynamite or this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxN9Mw6iQUs&feature=related)

I usually get more people telling me I'm going to ruin my knees or I'm ruining my body by running so much and that I should take some time off...oh, shut up! The people that put in the most work and effort should be the most rewarded. I was SO bummed when I was at the gym on Boston morning and NONE of the millions of sports channels we can watch on the TMs were broadcasting the marathon. I realize that to most people watching runners is like watching paint dry, but it is a HUGE event...maybe just a few screen shots? NO mention! boo.

Oh, RAchelle, I don't have a real job...just a sugar daddy :)

Crazy crazy crazy!

Maybe thats what makes running so great!! All the sports I grew up playing have been ruined by spoiled, selfish, over paid cry babies!!!!

From Dan on Tue, May 15, 2012 at 18:23:48 from 24.209.83.20

And yet we press on, makes ya wonder how many other 'sports' would even survive if the money was the same. Heck I'm thrilled if I can score a free pair of shoes once a year :)

Interesting, and it's really too bad about the lack of pay. With all the awesome athletes we have in this country, imagine how dominant the U.S. would be if there were some more financial incentives.

Although I will admit I would much rather watch a football game than people running around a track. I'm part of the problem...sorry!!
