Personal:

I am originally from Knoxville, TN and moved to SLC with Jake in 2010. I started racing in 2011 and had some great success before a major injury hit me in July 2012. I had athletic pubalgia surgery in May 2013...then again in Sept 2014 and am still trying to get back to my old self. Although running is my true passion, I love doing pretty much anything active outdoors - backcountry skiing, backpacking, biking, etc.

I've been running for the Saucony Team since 2011. I enjoy representing the brand and really do believe they make the best shoes :)

I work as a Quality Engineer for BD Medical in Sandy.

5.7 miles with Allie at Liberty Park. After 1.5 mile warm-up, we did 3 x 1 mile w/ 0.4 mile recovery jog. Miles were 6:30, 6:20, 6:18. I am happy with the workout - it's a great start to running fast again. Allie is coming back quickly after the marathon and pushed me to run faster than I would have solo (this is my 5K pace right now, after all).

My plan is to convince Allie to make this a weekly tempo workout and be able to gradually increase the duration that I can run this pace with her.

My second plan is to laugh at this workout in a couple months. Longest run yet!!

PM - 5 mile bike ride with Jake.

weekly tempo - i'm convinced. we should go for two continuous miles next week!

i think this was a great workout today (we have to start somewhere!), but yes, someday (soon) we can laugh at this.

5.7 -- and moving on up...

Holy crap fasties! I would totally get in on that if your times were say a few minutes slower :) Longest run - yay!!!

When was the last time you broke 6:30? Or 6:20?!?!

So happy that things are moving in the right direction.

As the head of engineering at Saucony said so eloquently...

"Most important: that’s great news about Andrea. Glad the Rides are helping, but I strongly suspect not having a giant hole in her abdominal muscles helps a bit too…"

Awesome! I am so excited for you Andrea and I am laughing out loud about the comment about the hole in your abdomen.

Really great workout Andrea. My husband said he saw you running on Wasatch the other day. Glad to hear you are keeping things moving forward consistently!

Very solid off that mileage base! The body remembers, even if it takes its time. I always love to watch 5k pace, become 10k pace, HMP, and so on.

Awesome!!

Incredible! Just like Jason said--once you have been at a certain fitnes level, the body remembers and is ready to jump back to it!!

AWESOME. So good to see. Hilarious abdomen comment.

Would love to hear more about the extent to which you were able to maintain your fitness (and how you did it) while injured, and how quickly you're gaining it back. There is tons of research on how quickly people lose fitness/strength, but it would be great to hear your perspective. Blog post perhaps? :)

Wow, nice! If you can do that off of a few 3 and 5 mile runs, you'll definitely be back to your old self when you can really train again.

Thanks all! This is going to be a fun comeback.

I was thinking about goals during my run this morning. - for 5K sub-20 in Sept, sub-19 in Oct, sub-18 in Nov. I'm obviously hoping that my legs remember how to run fast :) I'm getting ahead of myself here...

Penny - I need to update the wasatch blog for post-surgery progress and such. In regards to maintaining fitness while I was injured, I didn't do anything. I took months off without any exercise except maybe arm weights. I couldn't do anything without pain...makes me sad to just think about it again. The two things that are helping me now are 1) I didn't gain any weight during the break 2) I've been running relatively consistently for 15 years. Hmmm...maybe I could do a blog post on this too!

From Jake K on Thu, Aug 08, 2013 at 10:41:58 from 67.177.11.154

Nothing like the old "drop a full minute off your 5K every month" progression! :-)
