Personal:

I'm married to Nan Kennard and she kicks my butt at running.  She has beat me handily in every race we have done together except for a downhill mile we did once.  She is my running inspiration.  I'd like to run a marathon with her someday and actually keep up.

These shoes are money.  Jun wasn't lying.

The Altra Instinct – www.altrarunning.com

Thank you Golden Harper and Brian Beckstead.  For creating a shoe that fits a normal foot and doesn’t have a built in heel lift.

I mean honestly, how hard would it be for more shoe companies to just make a shoe like this?  Its not that hard people.  But while its not rocket science, I applaud and appreciate Brian and Golden for taking the risk to start a new shoe company to create footwear that promotes natural running form, since its obviously so hard for all the big companies to do it.

Sure they have been coming around slowly over the last number of years, but as I look around I still can’t find a shoe like this anywhere else.  Even the new balance minimus shoes still have a slight heel to toe drop and the shape of the shoe still isn’t ideal in my opinion.   And it doesn’t have to have a pocket for each toe and require odd looks and stares from all passers by in order to allow the foot to move like it should.  Its really quite simple:

A – make the shoe conform to the shape of a foot and not a foot to the shape of the shoe.  (granted, not all feet are created equal, I get that, so perhaps this is just the shoe that fits my foot best.  But I have a hunch a lot of people would like this shoe)

B – Make it the same thickness under the forefoot as at the heel.  I mean seriously…why rob the body of its natural propulsive power and efficiency by sticking a wedge under the heel?  That doesn’t make any sense at all to me.

This is the first shoe I have ever worn that truly fits my foot and allows my foot to ‘feel free to move about the cabin’, freely and comfortably.

After testing it on an 8.5 mile hour long run this morning, I am definitely digging it.

I’m very glad to finally have a shoe that fits and doesn’t have a built in heel lift.  Soooo glad.  Its quite refreshing and still making my day.

The shoes arrived yesterday and though I already had a nice road bike ride up to the top of flagstaff with Nan this morning, I had to get out and break them in afterward.  And they did not disappoint.

Oh so that's what they're supposed to look like! :) I had forgotten what their actual color was. I should post a pic of mine after yesterdays run. I seriously can't say enough about how amazing these shoes are. I'm glad you like em. The Lone Peaks can't get here soon enough.

I can't wait to get some of these. I have been holding off because of my achilles issues. I think I need to get that under control and then I plan on trying them out. Keep us updated on what you think as you wear them more. Hey, are you doing Quest for Kings? You have to defend your title.

Scott - I will indeed be out to defend the title and I'll come bearing some serious cow bell.

Maybe they will help you get the achilles issues under control? If you start out in them moderately.

Matt - Are you coming to Kings peak?

Sweet! I think I will pick up a pair of the Lone Peaks when they come out (hopefully) this Fall and then slowly start incorporating them into my rotation. I'm hoping to take at least 90 minutes off of my Kings Peak time. It will probably help if I don't take a Fenegrin (anti-nausea that knocks you out) at Anderson Pass like I did last year :)

What is your goal time this year?

From Dorsimus on Fri, Jul 29, 2011 at 12:41:00 from 75.162.150.206

I was planning on it, but we are going to be in San Diego that weekend...Doh!

Yeah Scott, lay off the pregnancy meds when you run, might help a little. :)

HAHA!

From Aaron Kennard on Fri, Jul 29, 2011 at 12:48:14 from 98.245.117.176

I don't really know a goal time. I think I could run it under 5 hours because last year I did 5:45 and that was pretty leisurely and we were stopping to chat with people and fill up in streams for probably 15 minutes, but I'm not really sure. You never know what may happen at altitude on a given day I don't think. But this year I'd like to run it straight through and bring more water so I only have to stop maybe once, and see how fast I can do it.

Well, hopefully I'll get to hang with you for a few minutes anyway.
