Personal:

I've been running since high school (mid-1990s) and do pretty well when I'm focused on a goal. My main problem  is running consistently when I'm NOT training for something specific. I'm an attorney, and I've been married to my husband, also a runner, for 5 1/2 years. We live in Phoenix, Arizona.  We had a beautiful baby girl, Caroline, in August 2009.

Long, hilly run and bike ride.  Very beautiful, rode 14.05 miles on the cruiser bike and ran 3.25 in the middle, got lost in the woods, but I'm not going to retype the whole entry again.  Lots of fun...

Hi Shauna,

I am glad you are enjoying your vacation!

I have PF pretty bad and have been living with it for over a year. I have heard of people getting bone spurs as part of the progression of PF - but have never seen any scientific evidence that would suggest that having PF and running on it causes a stress fracture. Stress fractures of the foot are pretty rare and difficult to diagnosis (Dean had one near his toe that was pretty spectacular though).

I use a soft night splint every night (http://www.northcoastfootcare.com/store/thermoskin-plantar-fxt-soft-night-splint-p-77.html) and wear birkenstocks whenever possible (they really really help). I bet you can find a good shoe place up there in the northeast that sells them!!! I warned you about those heels, I will chastise you to no end if I see you wearing heels when I visit you in Phoenix (or you visit me in Tucson).

Get lots of rest!

Your run biking sounded great! Sorry about the PF :( Sounds like Bonnie knows her stuff. Hey Bonnie- if you get a chance (and don't mind :), go see Leslie Peterson's blog. She's got PF and is feeling pretty bad. (leslie's link is on my blog)

Sounds like an exciting bike ride! Fun!

Getting lost is always fun (once you find your way back, of course)... Glad to hear you're having fun!

Looks like I may be running PF Chang's as well! Is it a pretty flat course? Is it a fun marathon? I hope to meet you there if I end up going!

Just wondering how the rest of last week went for ya? Still on track for SGM?

From Shauna on Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 16:57:22

Bonnie, thanks for the tips. My husband went to the doctor today, and he recommended a night splint for him. My foot hasn't been hurting lately, because I have been sitting on my lazy butt. :-)

Lucia, PF Chang's is a blast! It is a very flat course, and the weather is usually perfect. That will probably be my BQ race, so maybe we'll get to run together!

Christi, thanks for checking in. I wasn't able to get out for the rest of last week. It's funny how busy one can get on vacation! This has been a rough week too (I was sick the other day). I am still planning on SGM, though, although missing a week of peak training will probably put me behind.

From Kim on Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 17:08:46

Since we see PF so dang often on this blog I sure wish it always meant "PF Chang's"! Too many people have injuries with a lot of that being PF! I guess that is part of being a runner!

I hope the continued training for SGM goes well. It's right around the corner!

Where is the PF marathon? Are you using SGM as a training marathon for that? What do you need to BQ? Sorry about all the questions.

From Shauna on Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 17:23:38

Hey Kim! Don't worry about the questions: ask away! The PF Chang's marathon is here in Phoenix (also goes through Scottsdale and Tempe), and it's in mid-January. SGM is kind of a training marathon, but I also want to do well there (not as much of a possibility now, but I should still do OK). I need a 3:40 to BQ, which I hope will happen at PF Chang's.

I haven't been on the blog in a while. I'll check out your training tonight when I have some time. I'm sure you have continued to do great!!

Hey Shauna, still time to get in great SGM shape. Missing a few days on vacation won't hurt you. Have a great weekend and a great RUNNING week!
