Personal:

I've been running since high school (mid-1990s) and do pretty well when I'm focused on a goal. My main problem  is running consistently when I'm NOT training for something specific. I'm an attorney, and I've been married to my husband, also a runner, for 5 1/2 years. We live in Phoenix, Arizona.  We had a beautiful baby girl, Caroline, in August 2009.

Well, I finally went for a run.  I ran 3 miles at a 9:55 average.  It took almost 10 minutes to get my heart rate back down to 120 though!  It will be interesting to see how much fitness I have retained after a month of sitting on my couch.  I have not gained back any weight, so that is good.

I am having a problem with work/life balance.  Work has been extremely busy lately, and I just have not had energy, or the desire, to keep training for the marathon.  I can't do anything in moderation, though.  Basically, it's either train for a marathon and run 6-8 miles a day, or nothing.  That is a bad way to approach work/life/everything.

My husband has a stress fracture.  he was just diagnosed last week, so he is out for 6 weeks.  Unless I make some miraculous strides in the next few days, St. George is not going to happen for me.  Frankly, I'm more disappointed about not meeting all you bloggers!  However, I should have a good head start for PF Chang's.  Hopefully my husband will be able to do the half then, and he and I can do a marathon together after that.  Time will tell...

Good luck with the juggling act. Family first, then work, then running - right? I really was hoping to meet you next month at the pre-race party, but if not then I know we'll meet sometime in the near future. Keep on, keeping on... (and don't quit posting, even if you ease off the running- we'll miss you too much!)

Great job on getting outside and getting those miles in. It's tough sometimes to get out. I hope your husband heals quickly. I'm sorry I won't get to meet you but there's always next year. :-)

Hey Shauna,

How are you and the hubby doing? Sorry you've had some bad luck. Hope there are lots of silver linings in there for you!

Hi Kim!

I'm still struggling with work/life balances (and losing!), but it's OK. I will be more motivated when my husband can run again (and when the clothes start getting tight again, which hasn't happened). But I will be watching the blog in eager anticipation next Saturday! Good luck!!!

Hey Shauna! How have you been? We miss you over here! I hope things are slowly getting better!

Hi girl! It's me again :) So have you read any of the St. George marathon race reports? They are definitely a great inspiration to me! All those busy girls like us qualified for Boston, so now I feel like I have to so I can go up there and meet everyone! Balancing work and running is VERY tough, but also so rewarding! I hope your hubby is getting better too. Hugs from afar!

Hey Lucia! Yes, I have read several of the race reports, and they were very inspirational to me as well. I'm definitely experiencing a slump, and the longer I go without running, the harder it is to start again. Argh! The weather is starting to get nice here again. How has your recovery been? Is the stress fracture all healed? my husband gets to start running again next week. Are you still thinking about PF Chang's out here in January?

From Lucia on Wed, Oct 08, 2008 at 11:42:11

I'm glad to hear your hubby is getting better! Maybe you can get to run with him now! I started back on Monday, after 8 weeks, and have to start super slow, running/walking for 30 mins then slowly increasing. Everyone is telling me January is too soon for a marathon and I don't want to get re-injured, so now I'm thinking of the Austin marathon in February. I may still go to Phoenix and do the half, so I can get to meet you and some other FRBers! I hope to see mileage back up here soon!

You'll feel so good if you start getting out on the road again (ok maybe not the first time). It is such a stress relief. And it is a gift to yourself. I know you work really hard. Exercise can be a gift to yourself for all your hard work. Thanks for your comment on my blog. So nice to have running buddies around the globe.

Miss you! hope things are going well. I'm struggling with work/running balance myself. We can do it!
