Personal:

I've been running since high school (mid-1990s) and do pretty well when I'm focused on a goal. My main problem  is running consistently when I'm NOT training for something specific. I'm an attorney, and I've been married to my husband, also a runner, for 5 1/2 years. We live in Phoenix, Arizona.  We had a beautiful baby girl, Caroline, in August 2009.

Today was a track workout, and it was almost 6:00 by the time we got out there.  With no shade, that is way too late.  Lesson learned!

The goal was 8 x 400s in 1:58 each.  I ran 7.5 of the repeats in 1:58, 1:56, and 1:55 for the rest, until the 8th repeat, which was a DNF.  It was too HOT by then.  My recovery by that point was a shuffle/walk, but I'm still counting it toward my mileage.

I feel pretty good about my performance on the 400s.  I'm not sure why I didn't finish the last one: either I did the others too fast, or the heat just got to me.  I'm pretty sensitive to heat exhaustion.  It was a decent run overall, though.  I am still sore but feel much better.

Nothing drains you faster than running in the heat. You did a fantastic job! Take it easy the rest of the day.

Great job! I'm impressed. Funny that you are sensitive to heat exhaustion living in Phoenix...

Good job at the track! Way to stick it out in the heat. I hear ya, I am REALLY sensitive to the heat too. I'm jealous about your Lake Powell trip. We go every Sept. and by this time every summer I get SO excited I can hardly wait! What part of the lake did you go to?

Our Tuesday morning track workout was almost identical! Except I didn't have quite the heat issues.

You have some great goals! I would like to hit your running accomplishments first and then go for your same goals sometime.

Yes, I am a big baby when it comes to extreme heat. I had a pretty bad episode of heat exhaustion from sleeping in too late and then trying an 11-mile training run for a half-marathon. Ever since, I have been more sensitive to heat, and I really have to watch it.

Christi, we went to Padre Bay this time. We usually go there or Last Chance. Back in the days when gas was cheaper, we would go up to Friendship Cove or Rock Creek. I love it up there!

Kim, thanks for the comment. You know, I think you are ready to hit my previous accomplishments (I'm not there anymore but hope to be again soon!). Your improvement over the past several months has been AMAZING. I think you're going to blow it away at St. George!

Hey Shauna, you should feel good about the first 7, but I wouldn't approach the 8th like you did again. I don't think you should start a 400 and not finish it unless you've broken a leg, snapped an achilles tendon, etc. The temperature at the beginning of a 400 isn't going to be different than the end. It's ok to adjust a workout as you go according to how you feel. Perhaps after #6 you say, I'm just going to do one more because it's too hot. But to start a 400 and not finish it teaches you psychologically to quit while running. You want your workouts to be controlled and to workout your mind as much as your legs. So, this is a good workout overall, but be careful to train yourself to gut it out. Next time if you get started at 5am I am sure the heat won't be an exacerbating factor.

Michelle, thanks for the advice. I won't do that again. If I ever feel like stopping like that, I'll imagine Coach Michelle yelling at me to keep going! :-)

And, no more "sleeping in" until 5:30!

One of the annoying things about living in AZ in the summer for sure, the early wake up, that and the 90 degree temp that greets you good morning when you walk out the door at 5am.

Thanks for reacting well to my comment!

I appreciated Michelle's comment too- I'm going to think about that next time I want to quit while running. I can't wait to get out my Powell map and look up the places you mentioned. We've gone to Cedar Canyon & Good Hope Bay in the past. We always leave out of Bullfrog 'cause most of the group is coming from SLC.
