Personal:

I've been running since high school (mid-1990s) and do pretty well when I'm focused on a goal. My main problem  is running consistently when I'm NOT training for something specific. I'm an attorney, and I've been married to my husband, also a runner, for 5 1/2 years. We live in Phoenix, Arizona.  We had a beautiful baby girl, Caroline, in August 2009.

Today is one day that I am extra-thankful for the blog, because I probably wouldn't have run otherwise.  I was supposed to do 7 miles today, but after an exhausting (but fun!) weekend at Lake Powell, not much sleep last night, extreme soreness, and some spotty sunburn, I promptly turned off the alarm at 5:05 this morning.  Then, I had a long day at work, including a 4-hour round trip to Tucson and back.  And, to top it off, it was 112 degrees today!

BUT, duty and the quest for consistency won over.  I did 3.1 boring miles on the treadmill at a 9:40 pace (1.0 incline).  I am trying to do what some much-wiser-than-me bloggers have recommended: running 6 days a week, no excuses, and not pushing it too hard on easy runs.

8 x 400s tomorrow morning: time to get psyched up!

Now that's dedication! Those are the days when you know you're a real runner! Keep up the good work!

Hi Shauna, Thanks for your comments this morning. I've been reading a ton of blogs where we are all trying to up weekly mileage, and cut mileage on runs longer in a quest for consistency. Me, Lybi, and Maria to name the three that come to mind. I asked Sasha in my blog this moring to direct me to anyone else in the process of trying to maintain 6-8 five days a week and to give dirction on how long Saturday runs should be in prepratation for a Marathon. I asked Lybi to keep posting on her weekday progress, but I'm hoping to get an actual disscussion about it for any of us who need help deciding when lower mileage/faster running/higher mileage/slower running should take place. Any suggestions here, or directions to other discussions would be appreciated. Thanks! P.S. I don't know how you Arizona runners do it in all that heat! Wow.

Lucia-thanks!

Luzylew-yes, I am intrigued by this whole consistent mileage throughout the week thing. I think it would be hard for me mentally to feel good about a marathon without at least a few long runs of over 16 miles and a couple of 20-milers. It's hard to argue with Sasha Science, though. Time-wise, it would be hard to run 10 miles a day during the week, because I work a lot. And with the Arizona heat, running outside twice a day is not an option in the summer. This might be a good thread to post on the discussion forum...

Shauna-great job getting out there. This is one battle you want to win, even if your mileage is lower on some days.

On the whole consistent mileage vs. long run, I would definitely advocate for long run. I think you should have consistent mileage in general. I do an average of 10 a day during the week, but I make sure I do at least 7. I would think the most crucial thing is getting out each day. I think on weekdays its ok to vary (like Monday 5, Tuesday 7, Wed 5, Thur 7, Friday 5, etc). The long run gives you marathon specific training. Running 7 miles every day will not be adequate for racing a marathon. I guess part of it is whether the goal is to finish a marathon, run it without stopping, or race it. If you want to do either of the last two, then you'd better do long runs. IMO, of course.
