Personal:

I've been running since high school (mid-1990s) and do pretty well when I'm focused on a goal. My main problem  is running consistently when I'm NOT training for something specific. I'm an attorney, and I've been married to my husband, also a runner, for 5 1/2 years. We live in Phoenix, Arizona.  We had a beautiful baby girl, Caroline, in August 2009.

I hate tapering!  I feel so unmotivated that I turn into a sloth!  I had every intention of running tonight.  Last night, we drove to my husband's brothers house to pick up a FREE treadmill that his wife is "letting us borrow indefinitely."  I was SO EXCITED to get a treadmill.  Everything worked fine at their house, except the display and the incline.  It was set at a permanent incline, but somehow we got everything working there.  So we loaded it up and brought it home.

Tonight I was planning 5 miles with 2 miles at race pace, and I thought I would try out the new treadmill.  Lo and behold, the incline AND the display were broken again!  I got some phone books to prop up the back so it would be flat, but I have no idea how to get the display working.  By then, I was so frustrated that I decided to just call it a night.  I spent the evening on the computer setting up the Mvelopes system (very cool budget tool-I am determined to quit blowing so much money this year!).  Tomorrow I'll just plan on running outside.  It was 71 degrees here today!

I hate it when the day slips away without a run too...I'm addicted..I'll admit it.

Good luck with the budgeting. I try and have a fixed dollar amount that I can spend and a fixed number of times I can go to the store during the month. For example I'm allowing myself $100 once a month at Walmart. For me it works better to go less often because with all my kids it's harder to get to the store.

I of course go to other stores and spend money there but I don't want to bore you with all the details...happy shopping...happy budgeting!

I'm sure you got some cross training in there in trying to carry a huge ol' treadmill!!

Very cool about the budget too. Great job!

I use mvelopes. The only problem is when I get behind. Don't get behind like I have!

You probably do not need very much of a taper to begin with if it makes you sluggish. A low-mileage runner does not need a taper at all. You need a taper when you are looking forward to it.

Regarding the budget. I think learning to budget and stay debt free is very important for your development as a runner (among many other things). When I get a moment I am going to write a brief article on this subject.

We decided to get Mvelopes to see where the money goes. I graduated from school with a lot of debt but paid most of it off. Now we have no debt except our mortgage and my student loan (locked in at 2.6%). We save a lot of our income, but I think we could save more (for a new master bath! Oh yeah, and retirement...) Living within our means definitely reduces stress, which leads to better running.
