What: OktoberFAST 5000m and 1 Mile
When: October 1, 2011
Where: Track (TBD, Salt Lake City area)
Why: PR!

Jake and I want a free, flat, and fast 5K race to use as a tuneup for Long Beach Half Marathon the next weekend. We thought it might be fun to make it an event and see if anyone else would like to race. I know that I could benefit from a little competition to run fast! Depending on interest, we could do a couple heats based on time. Maybe afterwards we could all go out for breakfast!

Reply if you are interested, and we can finalize details as the date gets closer.

Sounds fun. I wish it wasn't the same weekend as St. George.

Love the idea!  Unfortunately, it's the same weekend as St. George, and I don't live in SLC anyway, but I just thought I'd say I dig the idea.

I might be in SLC that day. May stop by if it works out.

I think this is going to be pretty fun, and a great way to run some fast times!

And it it goes well, we might do it again in late October or early November. I'd like to run a few tune up races before Philly, and there doesn't seem to be a plethora of (very competitive) events during that time frame like there are in the summer months.

Bummer. I'll be in Minnesota running the TCM.

Depending on how many people we end up having, I think I can probably time the race using my laptop. We'll just need a volunteer (maybe someone can convince their significant other or punish one of their children?) to start the clock and hit the finishing splits for the first couple people. Assuming I don't hit the wall and walk it in, I could take over timing duties once finished.

Although if someone had access to one of those snazzy "print out" stop watches, that would be pretty cool too.

I'll be there like shareware, and I can arm wrestle a kid into playing with your laptop, Jake.

Kam that sounds great. I think we will get a good (but manageable) turnout for this!

Jake:

I think we will get  a better turnout if you move it a week back. In addition to St. George Marathon, there is also the LDS General Conference that happens on the first Saturday of October.

XTerra nationals are the weekend before, so we can't do it then.

Update on this... as of right now we have a handful of folks that will definitely be there, and a handful of maybes.

I think we'll only run the 5000m unless someone really wants to run the mile, in which case I'm more than happy to time it.

For venue - we were thinking the Highland track (Sugarhouse)... unless someone has a better suggestion. Its usually not too busy there on Saturday mornings, and it sits in a little bowl and doesn't get very windy.
