I have been dealing with this swelling ankle problem for a few months now.  I never swisted or hurt my ankle. I noticed it was swollen one day and thought is was weird, but was not worried.  I watched it for about a month and it would always be more swollen on days I was more active and it always looked much smaller by morning but never all the way down.  It is swelling just above my ankle bone on the inside of my leg, it starts right in the center of the back of my leg and goes to the shin and is about 2 inches high.  I had my doctor look at it when I was in for a checkup on something else and she sent me to get a ultra sound because she thought it was a DVT.  That was ruled out.
Besides the fact that my ankle ends up buldging over my sock, it has become painful not enough that I can't deal with it but enough that I always feel it. The pain is not right next to my shin but more towards the center and back.  It never hurts while I am excercising or running but about 30 minutes afterwards it starts to hurt and throb in the whole area of the swelling. It hurts to push on but is not purple.  I do elevate it and rub it down everynight. Not sure what else to do.

I am wondering if anyone has any idea's of what this could be from?

Could it be impaired circulation down in that foot?  Have you tried compression socks to see if they help with the swelling?

The lady that did the ultra sound said the vein in my groin was very swollen, but when I talked to my doctor about it she would not talk over the phone about it and wanted me to come in and pay another copay.  I am just trying to figure it out on my own.  She did tell me to get a compresion sock, and I used it for a couple of days and it made things throb so bad and ache so I returned it.

WOW!  That is amazing.  Like a stress fracture broke or a twisting your ankle broke?  If you did not remember twisting it did they give you a  bone scan too?  Take care of yourself, I hope it gets better quickly.  I was in a cast for 4 months that went all the way up to my thigh when I tore the ligaments in my ankle.

He did an x-ray and said that I must have twisted it at some point because there is a very abnormal space between the ankle bone and the tibula and fibula. He said something was originally pulled and then at some point I landed hard enough and just in the wrong spot and my tibula and fibula hit each other. My tibula has new bone growth on the end of it where it has healed but it broke my fibula right across and it has been trying to heal because it has growth around it but can't because I did not have it stabilized.
I would have never guessed in a million years that it was broke.  I have this weird looking brace to keep it in place and hold it really tight. The doctor said if I was running on it before the brace and was able to stand the pain I can keep running on it as long as the brace stays on.  Can't hardley walk with it on so I don't know how I would run.  I am sure I will get use to it.  I have to wear it for 8 weeks.   He said he could put it in a boot and do crutches for a few weeks but I have 6 kids and three sets of stairs in my house. And I would go nuts not being able to move.  So I guess I chose a slower recovery plan but I will have some freedom this way. A cast like you had would drive me insane.

Thanks for the update. Are you able to cross-train? If yes, do it.

Pretty amazing that you were running on a broken ankle. It's tough to envision a scenario where it is possible to break 2 bones and not notice when it happened. Must have been a stress fracture gone bad, or maybe a very mild injury that worsened as you continued to run on it.

Did you see an orthopedic surgeon or just your regular doctor? It's strange that they told you that you cound keep running on it.

I would make sure that you get another x-ray to show that it is healing properly before you start running on it again.

I went to a foot and ankle specialist. I thought I had some other weird issue going on. I really did not think I was enough pain for anything to be broken. (Just alot of swelling and I thought the purple line was my vein showing through because it was just a blue stripe, that was until Tuesday and then my whole ankle started to turn black and blue)
He wanted me to come back in 3 weeks, so he could take another x-ray.
It is definatly more painful now that it is stable and I am forced to walk normal. (he said I was rolling my ankle to the side to take weight off the fibia bone, so more pain would be normal)
I have kept my foot up alot this weekend and the swelling has gone down alot, I did not relize how far up the swelling had gone until it started to go down.   I did go for a walk today and the pain was nothing I could not stand.
I am going to do everything I can to not lose any of the strength and cardio I have built up.
