Title: Food Feats
Post by: Tyler on May 30, 2008, 01:21:24 pm
I once chugged a two liter of pop in 1:15 (1 minute, 15 seconds) -- that's .9017 ounces/second and 2:21/gallon. The fact that I spewed it all over the church's bathroom is beside the point.

I think if I worked on my technique, the 1:00 barrier could be in reach, but the stars haven't yet aligned for that.

I can eat 10 reasonably ripe bananas at once.  I have eaten 4 whole bananas during a 2:27 marathon without slowing down at the aid stations. One time this banana eating ability created an interesting situation. I was at BYU in Economics 110. The topic of the lesson was the law of diminishing returns. The professor brought bananas to illustrate the principle. He asked for a volunteer to eat bananas, and I of course was happy to do it. Back then Sarah and I were very poor newlywed college students and could not afford to buy as many bananas as I could possibly eat, so free bananas sounded like a great idea. He gave me a banana every 5-10 minutes or so for a total of only 5. To his surprise I would eat one in a few seconds enjoying it very much and be ready for the next one immediately instead of slowing down and enjoying it less and less with each additional banana. At the end he announced that I ruined his presentation.

I remember Econ 110 - I must have had the same professor.  The law of diminishing returns = "If you keep eating bananas eventually you'll throw up."  I think econ principles are really important to teach kids, and I was explaining this concept to my son this week while convincing him to save some left overs from a restaurant.

I took Econ 110 in the spring of 1997. Do not remember the name of the professor, but he was a young tall dark-haired pleasant looking charismatic guy that got his Masters (or maybe PhD) from a school in Chicago.

When I was a kid - I mean 8-10'ish - I ate 18 full-sized (6 inches probably) pancakes at one breakfast sitting.  Although I have never been able to match that, I still do enjoy a good batch of pancakes - as anyone in our van at del Sol can tell you!  (baseball, ZZ top, and one poor waitress!... good times, good times!)

As a college freshman, I once knocked down a whole large papa johns pepperoni pizza in around 30 minutes. I was poor, won it in a contest, and had just did a long run.

But who hasn't done that? jk...

On our honeymoon cruise, I ate more and more at each dinner.  2-3 appetizers, salad, 2 soups, 2-4 entrees (the waiter just started bringing me more than one after the second day), and a bunch of desserts, sometimes 4.  I would even have Marci order a few extra appetizers/entrees/desserts to give to me, too.  Marci knew I normally eat a ton, but I ate so much on that trip that she was "appaled" (her words, not mine).  The best part is I was training for a marathon and didn't put on a pound!

I once ate 10 big jalapeno peppers for $5.00.  One of the dumbest things I have ever done.  Also, I had 8 huge waffles with whipped cream, peaches, strawberries, and peanut butter on top.  What was I thinking?

haha, I once ate 2 whole Large Little Caesar's pizza's.  I think I was 13 or 14 and I was in an eating contest with this big fat kid.  I was probably 5'7" and 120 at the most and the other kid was 6'0' and probably 220 lbs....I won by 7 slices, but was very sick for the whole day afterwards...didn't lose it though.

I ate 5 desserts in one meal when on a cruise, so I have Jon beat.  I also had 5 varieties of caviar on that trip.  I didn't gain a pound on the 7 day cruise.

Jon, the human vacuum cleaner (or garbage disposal, take your pick)!  You guys are amazing.  Here I was, thinking about having eaten something like 8 cheeseburgers when I was in high school, but you all blow me out of the water . . . I think I'll just go to my room and cry . . .  :'(

Tom and I just ate a cricket or grasshopper on our Race All Night!  I never thought I'd do that!  We'll give more details on the race when we are able to move and think again!

Again, you guys are weak:) Two summers ago I ate two Ben and Jerrys every day for almost 4 months. Last November I was in Kentucky and I put on 9 lbs in 6 days: steak, icecream, pie diet for breakfast lunch and dinner. On the last day of the conference I had to put a rubber band between the button on my pants and the button-hole. And I had to stand all day long to avoid ripping my dress-pants:)

Is that why you started running?  I don't know how proud of that I would be.

So how many cross-training miles does that convert to?

For Utah or for sea-level equivalent?

My friend Aimee Larkin eats a big bowl of ice cream the night before every marathon she runs.  No pasta, etc. Just ice cream.  She has qualified for the OT like 4 times.

St. George course altitude factor, or Ogden course type of altitude factor?

Any sea-level equivalent is just irrelevant to your training, unless you are planning to eat at Chicago or another course.

This is too funny. In high school (9th and 10th grade I think) I went on a 8-10 month milk party. I would put down an avg. of 1 gallon of Whole Milk with VD every day. I lived with my grandparents and my grandma thought it was just great that I'd drink milk like that. She never got tired of buying it. It just tasted so smooth and rich. Now I drink soy?

Back way before I started running to lose weight, I took a brother-in-law to one of the bowling alleys here in St George.  I heard that the resauraunt in the place served a burger that if you atr the whole thing you got it for free.  Just the patty alone was 2 pounds!  They had the buns made special at a local bakery.  They also served it with mutiple slices of cheese, tomatoes pickles and a lot of lettuce on it.  This monster also came with loads of fries.  You had to eat it all and you had to do it in either 45 or 50 minutes (I can't remember).  Lets just say that I didn't leave paying for that meal!!!  The crappy part is that you were supposed to get a free T-shirt afterward but when I got done they said that all they had was a size small!  Now honestly, only small!!!

Last summer I ate a two foot burrito with rices & beans, at Senior Iguanas a Mexican place in Pocatello.  I was still hungry so I finished off the beans & rice on my wife's plate.

Kory, is that one of those burritos they use two huge tortillas to make?  There used to be a place in on 100 S. in Provo that made burritos like that, and very inexpensive, too!  Don't know if it is still around or not . . .

Awesome!  I don't have any stories, but once my dad went to sushi with his wife and another couple.  It was still happy hour (all you can eat sushi or something), and they ordered 32 rolls between the four of them!  My dad was mad that they wasted all that food, but someone else in the group wanted their money's worth.  The worst part-if you wait too long to eat sushi, you would probably get really sick, so they didn't even get leftovers!

I don't know of this is as crazy as everyone else, but our team does a root beer mile, and I can chug four cans of root beer and run a mile. This whole thing is all under 8 minutes, and I haven't thrown up once yet.

Our team had a twinkie mile. You had to eat a twinkie before each lap. It makes me sick just thinking about it. I was second with a 6:13, and another kid did a 6:03. We were the only ones that didn't throw up after!

I could probably win the banana mile. In 2005 I ate 4 bananas during St. George while staying with the pack too for the most part with no adverse effects. My time was 2:27:21. I think I could run around 5:30 mile stopping to eat a banana at the end of each lap if I could start running once the entire banana was in my mouth.

I think that a banana mile would be much easier than milk or root beer because it's way easier on most peoples stomachs. I wouldn't mind a banana mile. :-)

Does anyone know what an "alfajor" is? If not, you can google it. Maybe you got one from a missionary coming back from SouthAmerica... it's just about as dense, rich and sweet as a chocolate/candybar can get. Two cookies with very rich caramel in between, covered in chocolate. When I was a skinny 12-15 year old trying to gain weight so my friends wouldn't make fun of me, I could eat 8 of those at once, without blinking.

I'm glad I saw this! I had a banana on mile 12 of the Marine Corps in 2006 and was planning on doing the same this year, but nobody seems to do that... Knowing that Sasha has bananas on the course too, I don't feel so strange for doing that too!

My brother brought home a couple boxes of alfajores from his mission in Argentina and they're so tasty! But they ran out way too fast...

I served in Argentina and I was seriously addicted to alfajores. Aguila and Havana are so heavenly! There was also this white kind at the kiosks for 50 cents that I'd get every day... can't remember the name. 3 of those a day, plus loads of strawberries and dulce de leche made me get rather large very quickly. It was only two months before I couldn't button my shirts up all the way. I'll agree that 8 at once is pretty impressive.

Hard to tell from the picture, but it's served in an actual (small) kitchen sink.  But it is tons of ice cream, bananas, and toppings.

But we Loganites won't share any more of our secrets.  If you want to know, you have to move here.  Otherwise, you'll be trying to trick us into divulging what the Planet Walk is...

Oooh the Planet Walk....better be careful with that one.  Don't worry...my lips are SEALED.  ;)  Admittedly on cleaning the sink I did it with one other person.  Most people take 4-6 people though and still find it hard...depending on how fast their metabolism is.  I know I almost puked and I felt ill for the next day and a half.  I figure I ate at least a third of a gallon of ice cream plus all the toppings...they are the worst part as far as eating that much goes.
