Title: Pinched sciatic nerve
Post by: Marissa on April 10, 2010, 07:33:28 pm
Hi, a few weeks ago I was running and somehow pinched my sciatic nerve. I went to the doctor, and I have been taking it easy and not running-since I can barely walk. Has anyone experienced this before? Any suggestions? I'm hoping it's getting better fast enough that I can run a marathon Saturday (I know it's not realistic, but I hate to be a quitter :) )

I could be wrong, but look up Josse (I'm not sure of her blog name, but she's a frequent poster) on the blog.  I think she has dealt with this injury.

I believe this is often caused by tight piriformis muscles.  Here's a good piriformis stretch:  http://www.halhigdon.com/15Ktraining/Stretch.htm  I also like the chair stretch listed here:  http://sportsmedicine.about.com/od/flexibilityandstretching/qt/Piriformis_str.htm  because it's easy to do while I work (sitting in front of a computer all day long).  Something to try, perhaps, if all the doctor told you was to rest.
