Title: Marathon movie Post by: Jon Allen on January 03, 2008, 01:42:51 pm I don't know how many of you have seen advertisements, but there is a movie on marathoning showing 1 day only in movie theatres.
http://www.active.com/running/spiritofthemarathon.htm?act=BAC-Spirit_HouseAds&AdUnit=8 It would be good for the running community to support this as best we can, in my opinion. Title: Re: Marathon movie Post by: Chris Weidman on January 04, 2008, 07:29:12 am Sorry to say that St George is not on the selected theater list - hopefully it'll go to DVD soon.
Title: Re: Marathon movie Post by: jtshad on January 04, 2008, 10:10:14 am I got a note from Active.com for presale tickets to the movie...luckily it looks like it will be here in IF.
Title: Re: Marathon movie Post by: Michelle Lowry on January 04, 2008, 10:20:56 am I saw this advertised in the theatre as a preview. I want to see it! The preview showed a woman leading a pack of men and they were all going fast! Very inspiring for us chicks!
Title: Re: Marathon movie Post by: Michelle Lowry on January 04, 2008, 10:23:59 am Oh, oh, oh, the woman was Deena Kastor!!!! I just clicked on the active link and didn't realize she is one of the racers featured. Now I really want to see it. I'll have to figure out where it is playing in Provo/Orem. I post when I find out. Perhaps we can make it a group affair!
Title: Re: Marathon movie Post by: AndyBrowning on January 04, 2008, 11:06:35 am I just bought tickets for the showing at the Century 16 in SLC. Any other FRBers plan on being there?
Title: Re: Marathon movie Post by: Ted Leblow on January 04, 2008, 12:48:43 pm It is playing in Provo at the following location on JAN 24th at 7:00pm: Anyone planning on going?
Cinemark 16 Provo 1200 TOWN CENTER BLVD. PROVO, UT 84601 8018528527 Title: Re: Marathon movie Post by: Dallen on January 05, 2008, 07:38:16 pm I looked at my local theater (Chicago) and noticed that they want to charge me $12.50 for a ticket. Normal price is $10. I find this slightly offensive. I understand that there are some financial reasons for this, but I kinda feel like we are being taken advantage of. Are they charging increased prices elsewhere?
Title: Re: Marathon movie Post by: Paul Petersen on January 05, 2008, 07:47:44 pm $10 sounds like a rip-off too. They just raised movie prices in Logan from $6.50 to $7.00. I couldn't believe it. I need to write an angry letter to the Herald Journal.
Title: Re: Marathon movie Post by: Adam R Wende on January 07, 2008, 02:00:18 pm When I was in Chicago over break, the "normal" ticket price for I am Legend IMAX was $13.50 ea...
Title: Re: Marathon movie Post by: jtshad on January 07, 2008, 03:39:29 pm They are asking $10 in IF as well when the regular price here is $7.50. I don't go the the "big" theatre very often, we wait until it hits the $3 theater about a month later. Unfortunately, this won't happen with this movie, so we'll see if I make it.
Title: Re: Marathon movie Post by: Michelle Lowry on January 07, 2008, 06:15:16 pm I plan on going in Provo and trying to get my female posse to go so we can have a runner's night out. They don't tend to watch the discussion forum so I'll need to email them.
Title: Re: Marathon movie Post by: Logan Fielding on January 14, 2008, 07:22:08 am I got my tickets yesterday for the show in Ogden. They were $10.00 and worth every penny. They said they had 213 left. We need to get more people out to watch this. Let me know if I need to go and get tickets for anyone.
Title: Re: Marathon movie Post by: Michelle Lowry on January 22, 2008, 09:01:17 am I am going with my husband Paul to the Provo showing. It should be a great motivating tool and might help my husband understand that I actually am not the highest mileage runner and maybe even help him catch the vision so he can prepare for his first marathon.
Title: Re: Marathon movie Post by: Dee Smith on January 22, 2008, 11:36:25 pm I also got tickets for the showing in Ogden. There are a few of us who run together who are going.
Title: Re: Marathon movie Post by: Logan Fielding on January 25, 2008, 06:31:28 am Absolutely loved the movie last night. I got a little emotional when it showed Deena Kastor coming in and winning bronze at the 2004 Athens Olympics. That was inspiring! If you didn't see it, they are showing it again on February 21st. Get your tickets!
Title: Re: Marathon movie Post by: Michelle Lowry on January 25, 2008, 07:25:43 am I got all teary eyed from the start. It was really good. My only criticism is that they followed about six people, two world class, on 3:10ish and then the rest were noncompetitive. I would have liked to have seen a person or two at my level or elite like Paul Petersen, people who are really good but more approachable. Something between 50 mpw and 140 mpw.
Title: Re: Marathon movie Post by: AndyBrowning on January 25, 2008, 08:24:09 am I agree with Michelle. I had a hard time indentifying with any of the runners. It would have been nice to see somebody like "us" - the runners who have jobs and families but still work hard to maximize their potential. I did enjoy the movie but was expecting a little more.
Title: Re: Marathon movie Post by: Craig Green on January 25, 2008, 09:34:19 am Yes! That's exactly what I said in my blog. I had a hard time relating to the runners, because it has been so many years since I was in that "trying to qualify and not sure what I'm doing" mode, yet I'm not elite. There were really no FRB-type runners.
I thought the guy trying to qualify for Boston was kind of whiny. I don't know if it was just me, but he had some insecurities going on there, even before he got hurt. Other than that- I really liked the personalities of all the others. I kept thinking his wife was going to tell him to "shut up"! lol Title: Re: Marathon movie Post by: Jon Allen on January 25, 2008, 09:43:08 am Hopefully the Feb showing will be in Logan so the group up here can see it.
Title: Re: Marathon movie Post by: Paul Petersen on January 25, 2008, 09:48:57 am Hopefully it will come out on Netflix.
Title: Re: Marathon movie Post by: Ted Leblow on January 25, 2008, 10:53:00 am I took my son James and enjoyed it but I would agree with everyone else that it ws hard to truly identify with since it did not really have any "sub-elites". Individuals that are not just trying to get a BQ but those that are striving to make the Olympic Trials Standard or at least those that are around 2:30s for men and sub 3:00 for women. It was a good documentary overall but I did leave wishing it would have spent more time on the two elites as their stories did interest me more than the others. However, with the vast majority of the targeted audience in mind it probably resonated well with the general populace.
Title: Re: Marathon movie Post by: jtshad on January 25, 2008, 11:12:15 am Overall a good documentary with a good mix of elite and regular marathoners mixed in. I agree that I really didn't identify with any of the runners in particular, even the 3:10 guy who was closest really didn't seem to be too focused at tiimes (and then got injured). One of the gals who runs at the gym the same time I do commented on his "demonstration" of the elite pace on his treadmill of running 12mph. She looked back and said "I see Jeff do that nearly every morning" which was kind of a cool complement.
Interesting to see the how the different training programs work across the country...amazed by the organization of the Chicago area runners association group runs. I am much more like the Lori gal in doing most my stuff solo, but enjoy the company when I get it! |
