During marathon training last year, all my long runs wound up being done on a track.  Five 20 mile runs.  I didn't plan on this happening but it just worked out this way and it turns out I like doing my long runs on the track.  Being that I like it, I want to do the same thing this year. 

Is this stupid?  That's my question.

During the winter, the track is a nice safe place to do long runs.  I set out a TV tray and load it up with water and fig newtons, it's perfect.

I still get a good road pounding during my other weekly mileage, plus lots of up and down hill.  Is it necessary that my long runs be on the road?  I think not, but then again, I'm not above being stupid.

Whatever gets you out there running, super.

My only suggestion would be to change direction every couple miles or so. Running counter-clockwise for 20 straight might overstress a knee, ankle, or hip. Think of it like rotating tires.
