I will be buying new shoes soon.
Any suggestions to what type or brand?
I consider myself to have normal feet. My only thing is my aquilles tendon is still under repair.

I'm considering shoes with extra cushioning....

First, you need to find out if you are neutral, over pronate, or under pronate.  The wet foot test is an easy way to figure this out, though crude- just google it.  As for type or brand, simply buy the pair that feels the best that is the correct support (under pronate, neutral, etc).  Try on a lot if you need to.  And don't feel that the best pairs are always the most expensive- nothing wrong with paying less than $120 for a pair of shoes.  I like to get mine on sale for around $60.

Thanks Jon. I just got a coupon for 60% discount on a Nike outlet here in town. My current shoes are Nike. Since I don't know much about brand, I thought I ask to see what other people suggest.
I always thought that Nike are good but not the best.

The best is whatever gives you the proper support and feels good.  I wear mainly New Balance since I have wide feet, but also like some Brooks, Saucony, Nike, and Salomon.  My only recent pair I was not happy with was Mizuno.  Lots of people where Asics.

I started with Asics 2090s and would never go back. Asics are consistently one of the most popular shoes on the market, and I know I swear by them. I don't have the money for those fancy shoes that just blow out after a few runs that a lot of elites wear. But my Asics are tanks. I generally get 500-600 miles out of them and I am extremely tough on my shoes!

I've generally always been a Nike guy. My most recent pair of Nike's were the Nike Elite. I really liked them, but found that the shocks seemed to be completely gone by 450 miles. Prior to that I ran on 3 pair of Nike Vomero's. Very soft shoe, great for your knees, but the most recent edition, Vomero 3, seems to be almost flat offering no arch support. I trashed them after only 300 miles. Currently I'm running in a pair of Asics Cumulus, which I love, and a pair of Nike Pegasus. The Pegasus are a bit firm, but I find that the form of the shoe really throws me forward, meaning, I run fast in them. They are just a shoe conducive to quick runs. I do all my tempo runs in them and like them quite a bit. Like I said though, they were a bit firm to start with and took some breaking down as it were.

Thanks all! Will go shoe hunting this weekend with all of my girls. I hope to find a good pair. And hope I don't regret bringing my girls shopping with me (they tend to leave me broke!!)   Grin

FYI Eastbay.com has a sale going on with a virtual scratch off ticket sale..  I got a coupon that took 20% off a purchase of 75 bucks or more, so I ordered 2 x Asics Gel 2120s @ original price 94.99, sale price of 59.99 PLUS the discount.. whole thing with 14 dollar shipping charge ended up only being 112 bucks! Essentially 2 PAIRS OF SHOES FOR the PRICE OF ONE! I suggest anyone that needs shoes check them out! You get your shoes within the week too!

Thanks Benn, but I'm Mexico and Easybay.com would not work for me...I'll try the Nike store.

Most running stores, at least here in Seattle, hate Nikes. The reason for that is they feel like Nike has done little to address the needs of the runners who pronate. Nikes, they would say, are great for neutral runners, but offer little if anything for the vast majority of runners who are NOT neutral.

I have found my Brooks to be very reliable as I am a mild to moderate pronator. The Adidas SuperNova Classic -- very difficult to find -- are the most comfortable shoe I have ever worn.

Asics in the model that is right for you are by far and away the best shoe I've wore. It seems they have a nice roll to them and last a little better than the competitors. (I'm neutral)
They are always changing the shoes so right now the best shoe in their line up is the Cumulus. In years past the old Landreth II was amazing but you can't find it anymore.

I think it is same to assume, based on the replies, that everyone seems to have a favorite shoe brand.  I used to hate Nike's, don't feel quite as strongly about them now as I used to.  I have worn many different brands over the years - Nike, Brooks, New Balance, Saucony.  Right now, the Saucony's work best for me.  To each their own.  The advice you have received, though, is most important - figure out what your foot type is first, whether using the wet foot test, or have a gait analysis performed.  Getting the wrong kind of shoe can be a major recipe for injury/re-injury.  Do NOT rely on some salesperson to know what you really need - they are going to try to sell you the most expensive shoe they have, nine times out of ten.  Go into that store knowing what type of shoe you need (stability, neutral, motion control), research the different models of that type of shoe, and then try them on and see how they feel.  If they don't feel good, do not feel obligated to buy just because you are there.

Thanks all.
Most have made the point to forget brand and go by comfort. I agree to this.
My feet are normal/neutral, so no problem there.
I believe the salesperson will have a long afternoon with me as a client  Grin... I will try every pair until I find -the- right one, if it exists there.

My personal favorite is Saucony.  They tend to run slightly heavier than a lot of others, but they usually offer great stability and support which is a must for me because my feet can get kinda fickle sometimes.  Also they are usually fairly cheap and are pretty durable too...I've tried about everything and about the only shoe that competes on durability is Asics.   I usually don't wear Asics though because for me after about 200 miles they go all "flat" for lack of a better word and lose that supportive feeling and feel kind of floppy...but like I say my feet are really picky so if your feet are not that way than you are good either way.  Just what I wear though...no two pairs of feet are the same so try lots and when you find one that feels good stick with it.

Well I'm an overpronator but I have had orthodics for the last 4 years since I started running to make me fit into neutral shoes. So it stinks because when I run I have to take out the gel inserts that come with shoes, so I just run with a half orthodic under my arch and heel, and then nothing under the balls of my feet. Talk about tough feet! :-D

Is that Adidas shoe good for pronators?
