The FRB has a team participating in the Ragnar Relay Northwest Passage race this weekend.  I figured I would pass along any news from them.  They are running very shorthanded- only 9 runners rather than 12.

They moved their start time up to 2 pm so they could start with 15 other teams (they were originally scheduled to start at 4 pm with just one other team).  Predicted time was somewhere around 21-22 hours, I think.  The first set went well, and they are 1.5 minutes ahead of schedule.  They are leading their 2 pm pack and are catching 12 pm and 1 pm teams.  The only adventure so far is that they accidentally drove van 1 into a ditch and got stuck.  They sent their next runner to the exchange with another team and got towed out about 30 minutes later, but all is well.

That must have been nerve wracking to have the van stuck.  The big question was who was driving?

Michelle- I don't know who was driving.

9:30 AM Update- Just talked to Cody.  Van 1 is done and the team is about 30 minutes ahead of schedule (actual predicted ~20 hours).  They have blown away all of the other 2:00 teams but have not seen the team that started behind them, so are not sure who is running faster right now.  He said there are 6 teams left in front of them, so they may finish first.  Cody had jumped into van 2 to run another extra leg (his 5th leg), since that van only has 4 runners.  Good challenge for all of them.  They said it is nice weather and a beautiful, green area.  They should be done in about 2 more hours.

Update: talked to Dave on the phone. They finished at 10:31AM (Pacific time), so their time was 20 hrs, 31 minutes. This averages out to 6:39/mile, pretty good for a 9-man team (supposed to be 12 runners). Both Cody and Andy ran 5 legs, so get the superhero award.

At the time I talked to Dave, he did not know about the team that started later. If this other team finished after noon, then our team won.

The team official took 2nd overall, out of 153 teams. They were beat by a measly 6 minutes by an ultra team that started later than they did, so they were not racing head-on. But that also means they were 1st overall in the Open division. For the record, our team finished 32 minutes ahead of their projected time, which is rather overachieving, and difficult to do in a relay (especially short-handed), with most people flying out and traveling a long ways to get there.

By the way, the official team name was "MarathonGIS.com / FastRunningBlog.com", so the title of the thread is not completely accurate. The team members were:

Cody Draper (http://cody.fastrunningblog.com)
David Nelson (http://nelson.fastrunningblog.com)
Dale Marchard (http://dale.fastrunningblog.com)
Craig Green (http://craig.fastrunningblog.com)
Andy Browning (http://andyb.fastrunningblog.com)
Matt Rowley (http://mattrow.fastrunningblog.com)
Aaron Shakow (http://aaron.fastrunningblog.com)
Mark Payne (http://reddragon.fastrunningblog.com)
Tim Sturm (needs to join the blog)

Van 1 had 5 runners, Van 2 had only 4. Check back at these guys' blogs in a few days for full reports! Sounds like they had a blast and ran their hearts out. Wish I could have been there, but was not meant to be this year. Maybe next year!

For the record, I and I alone drove my pickup truck acting as Van 1 into the ditch!  Fortunately, my quick-thinking teammates bailed my butt outta hot water and didn't miss a beat.  And yes, it's not much, but before we left the scene of the crime, I made Cody got some video and picture footage to commemorate the occasion.  I'm thinking of building some sort of memorial there as a warning to others.  Only I'm not allowed to drive there anymore, so if I could catch a ride someday........

Off to eat and finally get some sleep!

It was a good race. I think all of us beat our projected times overall.

My aplogies to Andy- I was supposed to run the 5th leg, but the nagging ankle issues flared up bad during my 4th leg and I hobbled in. Blah.
