According to marathonguide.com, the guy who beat Paul ran the fastest marathon ever in the state of Indiana.  Nothing shameful about getting beat by that...  I find it amazing Paul was 1:30 back after 10k, and pretty much held on from there.

Per marathonguide-
St. Francis Hospital and Health Centers Indianapolis Monumental Marathon - Nov 6 - Indianapolis, IN
Leonard Mucheru, of WI, won the 2010 Indianapolis Monumnetal Marathon in a new course record time of 2:17:59. Mucheru, who finished fourth at the 2010 Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, also ran the fastest marathon time ever in the state of Indiana with his winning time. Paul Petersen, of Smithfield UT, who won the 2007 Ogden Marathon and 2009 Top of Utah Marathon, finished second in 2:19:48. Benson Cheruiyot, of Valparaiso IN, who finished second at the 2009 Houston Marathon and third at the 2007 Houston and 2008 Grandma's Marathons, was third in 2:21:17.
