I injured the right hamstring insertion about a week after the Park City Marathon last summer.  I took some time off and followed recommendations by a sports doctor and the injury is fairly well healed, unless I twist the knee suddenly.

I have started back into weight training (for now light weights with lots of reps) to get my leg muscles better balanced.  When I work the hamstring, there is one point where it feels like the muscle is 'going over a bump' on the inside of the right knee.  I'm thinking this might be scar tissue from the injury healing and am looking for suggestions as to means and/or methods of trying to pinpoint the area and break up the scar tissue (if it is that).

Thanks!

Maurine:

Take a look at

http://www.getbodysmart.com/ap/muscularsystem/thighmuscles/posteriormuscles/bicepslonghead/tutorial.html

to learn about the hamstrings

Also, for the knee

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Knee_diagram.svg (anterior view, from the front)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Gray351.png (lateral view, from the side)

and

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Gray352.png (posterior view, from the back)

see if those pictures allow you to describe the problem more precisely.

Also, do you happen to know which hamstring muscle was involved?

I actually do have something similar. I get a click when the semitendinosus/semimembranonsis tendon goes over the tibia. I used to think it had some special significance (as in causing some kind of big inefficiency when running), but do not any more.

Thanks, Sasha.  I'll look at that information this weekend and provide additional details based upon more research.
